About the police it was the thai motorbike renters who were telling me that the new sport in Phuket is "Check the farang", that the fine for no license is 500 baht, the fine for no helmet is 300 (anywhere else I know its 200....)
Stupid me forgot his license in Bangkok, so I just asked my girl to drive me around and indeed we never got stopped, but I did saw a lot of farang getting "checked" (or is it SHAKED?), most of them for driving with no helmet so really som nam na!
Cant really speak about P4P and girls attitude as I stayed with the same girl all the time because she was a real gem! Shane this one is not willing to find a job in Bangkok....i ll miss her
About food in PAtong, it is both EXPENSIVE and NOT GOOD (much too fat in every single place I tried!)

Dare I say it, but Patong is not the only place on Phuket Island. Try moving your arse (not being rude - just in the funny sense) and explore the f***ing island. There are hundreds of eating places that are not as expensive as Patong. Why did your food have too much fat ? What did you order - lobster and chips ?

Well, to anzwer you, my hotel was in patong and I was not really willing to go the other side of the f***ing island on motorbike just to eat...
I tried a variety of places and each of them was serving expensive FAT food (unless for you a Pesto composed of 70 percent oil is an ok thing?)....and no, no lobster as I am vegetarian

Fair enough - although a quick ride to Karon wouldn't take long, and there is a nice Italian there as you mentioned Pesto.
If you won't travel to find a nice restaurant and you won't eat meat or fish, your food report is perhaps somewhat restricted and not an accurate indication to any Newbie reading this of what Phuket has to offer. It might have it's downsides but food is not one of them.

Wow.
I am amazed at how many people are trashing Phuket!
Funny most are complaining about Patong - staying in Patong is like going to New York and staying in DA Bronx then saying NY sucks -pleeze.
I have had the most amazing seafood -garlic spicy prawns -salt pepper fish, crab fried rice (more crab then rice) several tall singha,s and red snapper with my date for 1000 baht at Na's Family Seafood near Bangla.
I had incredible Italian in Kata near the Beer Gardens -great pizza as well for the price of a meal in BKK.
Went to the Zoo and feed/played with tiger cubs for a hour - a memory that will last a lifetime.
Am a regular at the Beer Garden across the street from the Holiday Inn -behind the Flea Markert -Singha/Tiger Beer for 55 Baht.
Snorkel along the rocks at the beginning of Kata -near my favorite Jamaican bar on the water and see incredible tropical fish -eeeer that would be free.
Rented a long boat for the full day - me and Anne went to coral island - great food -singha 70 baht nice beach, great snorkeling. On the way back we trolled with a hand line and caught a barracuda.
There are also a few great golf courses.
Have stayed in Kata, Karon, Patong etc.. just explore -if you go to the tourist traps on Beach Road you deserve to get ripped off.
I usually bring a TG from Bangkok because I rather spend my day exploring the beauty of Phuket than waking up at 4pm like I do in BKK with a vicious hangover.
There are plenty of BG's in Phuket, if you cant find a sweetie for 1500 LT either you are blind -a drunk or prefer toothless hags in Ptty for 500Bht LT.
Pattaya is like Vegas - 3 days and its time to leave. It is definitely more for the Budget minded traveler.

I'm a big fan of Phuket, you can find just about anything to suit anybody. Sure there is lots of crap food, but look a little deeper & you can find lots of great food just as cheap as other larger Thai Cities.
The reason the food varies so much depends on the Tourist they are trying to attract!
The beauty of Phuket is that within a 30 minute drive you can go from wild to mild or crowded to deserted! People that only spend 2 days there don't really see its real beauty!

I have lived in Phuket for 11 years now, and would not choose to live anywhere else in Thailand. As other posters have said, you can find anything on this island, and there is sufficient variety to please anyone.
OK, occasionally I will take a trip up to Chiang Rai for a change of air,but that's about it for my off-island travel.
