Thai embassy in Laos also do two month visas for 1000 baht takes two days max to process.....did this regularly....
But getting it before you go is ofcourse best idea. ( but it's unlikely you would strike trouble as you can do this afew times a year )

Yes.
Your main problem is not the Thai Immigration, it's rather to convince Jetstar that they won't have problems with the Thai immigration and let you board.
If you don't want to take any risk:
1) Get a tourist visa for 60 days
2) Book a outbound flight from Australia to Laos (or wherever) with a booking date before the expiration date of a visa exempt (mind the correct term) entry.
3) If you want the freedom of being able to extend your stay beyond the 55-60 days, get a reentry visa before going to Laos and come back on your original TR. You will then be able to extend if for 30 days (or whatever the current term is).

DG, thanks for your response. As much as i'd like to use the 30 day exemption for both entries even the remote chance of Jetstar refusing to carry me is enough for me to get the 60 prior. I will ask when I check in what would have happened had I done it the other way.

Yes, that's my biggest concern. would hate to turn up for my flight and have Jetstar say "sorry, you can't board without a 60 day visa."
I'll get the 60 day visa prior. If I go to Laos for a week and come back via air the 30 day exemption will cover the remainder of my trip.

They allowed me to fly on aa one way ticket after producing a flight to Cambodia 7 days after planned arrival..
The Thais however kept me waiting 20 minutes while accessing it.( got worried )
So your solution is good....
