10 Years ago, this board motivated me to land in Bangkok during a vacation to Hongkong/Macau. I am glad that I did and I am very greateful to all the board members for their valuable information and occassional humor.
After 10 years and more than 30 trips to Bangkok, I am taking the plunge and moving to Bangkok in the first week of April.
The first thing is to find an apartment. Here are my requirements:
1. Must be able to install True Cable Internet (10MB Speed).
2. Apartment size is 30-45 SQM (preferabbly a studio or one bed room)
3. Ratchada or Sukumvit after Ekkamai
Please provide any web links or secret info to find a decent apartment for 10,000-15,000 bhat

I live down by Victory Monument (not exactly in the area you mentioned, but you might want to consider it). 32sqm studio up to 54sqm 2 bedroom, with a real nice pool area that gets sun most of the day, AC, fridge, TV, hot water in the fair size bathroom with a tub, motortaxi right out the gate, 15 minutes walking to the BTS, or bt20 with a motortaxi, excellent security 24 hours a day, very good cheap Thai restaurant that delivers on property, maid service, mini mart, laundry on property, quiet with no construction going on, a good neighborhood with 7-11 at the main road, and ATM at the end of the block. Water at bt140 a month, and electric a little high at bt6 a unit, but still hard to find it for less.
I rent one of the 32sqm studios for bt6000 a month rent. With everything including electric I pay under bt10000 a month. I have a couch, king size bed, closet with a nice TV center, microwave, free internet, but you'll want to get your 10 mbps line, it is available here, fridge, table with 2 chairs, coffee table, local phone at bt10 an hour, good AC that doesn't rattle, very secure locks on the door, you can also put a padlock on if you want to really feel secure while you are gone, balcony with a clothes drying rack.
The security will not allow anything large to leave the property unless you have made arangements before hand to do so, this includes leaving with a suitcase, but it is no hassle considering the level of security you get. There is also 2 gates to the property with at least 2 guards watching at night, and in the daytime, it also takes key card access into any of the buildings. It's only a bt57 taxi ride to Sukhumvit soi 23.
This is a Thai neighborhood with most things cheap that go with it. There is a bt60 barber right around the corner, cheap laundries, and straight massage everywhere, with a full service massage 2 corners down, I've been told....hehehe.
If you're interested msg me, and I'll give you the details. They also have daily rentals at bt800-bt1000, but the real deal is with a long term rental of at least 6 months.
Every day I live here, and the more I explore the neighborhood, the better I like it. There is a good view of the Bayoke Sky tower right down the soi. It's only 5 blocks away, but I'm out of the Pratunam area, so there isn't that element here. It's considered the Victory Monument area, with the BTS only 3 blocks away, but one of the blocks is a 10 minute walk....hehehe. The Big C is only a bt30 motortaxi ride, or a 25 minute walk.

I lived in Thailand from 2002 to 2005:
When I was a teacher, I lived behind St. Louis hospital and paid 7K a month for a 32sqm place and "pimped it out" into a pretty sweet little pad! It had no frill's except a roof top patio w/ grill, but maid service twice a week and a chinese cemetary/park that was great for jogging & people watching just down the soi and also (as KB pointed out) great cheap "local" food stalls, laundry places, barbers etc. It was on a muslim soi and a mosque was like 200 yards away and the chanting could be heard but never bothered me 
When I got my gig selling condo's I moved to SV City off of rama III and paid 14K for a great 1 bedroom on the 14th floor overlooking the pool and cp river! With power & UBC it came to about 17K a month! It had a great gym, korean bbq restaurant and awesome food court in the lower lobby. I was there in 2004 and there was no bts station, but I understand the subway station is within walking distance now. They had a taxi stand in the parking deck, so getting to work in the morning was a breeze and usually about 65 to 90 baht each way, depending on traffic (my office was at sukumvit & asoke). Man, that was a great little apartment 
@Koolbreeze, I think I have been to your building before, as I had 2 friends that lived over by VM and your description sounds like one of my mates. And yes, it was a good value.
Man Onera, you really got me reminiscing about those years living in BKK

You need to tell everyone exactly what building you live in. The situation you describe, given location and prices, sounds a bit too good to believe for Soi Rangnam area (I assume that's where you're talking about) for 2011...2006, maybe...

I lived on Soi Rangnam for around 4 years.... the thai/farang apartments cost more than that.... however, off of Ranganam there are Thai areas that I assume are less...... I personally really like the Soi..... only a BTS ride away from Suk or wherever you want and the Soi has a lot of Character..... Plus working girls and eveything else you might want !!! Never met a farang that lived on this Soi and had anything bad to say!
