Hey, this is a serious question for those of us who aren't actually in Thailand at the moment and are wondering what effect the new regime has had on the ridiculous 1AM closing times, if any.

A buddy of mine tells me the gogos are closing well past 2AM these days. If nobody can post anything other than lame jokes on the subject here, I will post a serious report after I arrive on November 2. I am hoping that I can get a drink that night at a gogo bar after my midnight arrival after checking in to my hotel, something I haven' t really been able to do after those late flights for a few years now, as a result of the policies of that ridiculous Thaksin regime.

So, the question is, are Cowboy, Nana, or Patpong pushing it past 1AM, 2AM or later?

the days right after the coup the police was powerless, since civilian rule is back in place but thaksin out of town it is the old game: those with connections in tourists only zones (patpong and nana-plaza) can and are pushing further now. PatPong many places open until sunrise. The direction all this is going is clear: no limits in tourists zones, harsh control outside, "thais should be home early and sleep during weekdays"

I have noted something around suk past days. Usually visit poolbars such as New Wave and Sanook. The latter one shuts it doors late and convert the place into a "disco" and the poor pooltables become barcorners and gogo dances-cenes! No wonder my balls always roll the wrong way! (ok- no joke about that now)

However- past evenings sweet policeguys comes in and closes it down. Seems to be the thing for other venues in the area as well. Have they changed policecommander or has he has not been paid enough? Must say that one of the things that really makes me feel bad about this country is the damn policecorruption. It is a shame in any civilised country and someday I hope a government can address it - somehow. Crocked cops - terrible!

To add to it: the other day someone told me that some guy had a girlfriend who got a 7-year sentence. Dont know for what. He was said to have paid 120.000 B and got her out! Unbelievable!

You seem to want bars to stay open late, and then bad mouth the way that they can stay open late (Paying the Police).

Would you rather have it be like in your home country where NOTHING is able to stay open later then what the GOV says?

Would you rather be able to pay a minimal fine for some offense. Say you get pulled over for speeding excessivly, or DUI (Even minorly drunk) in the USA. You not only will have to pay a hefty fine, but possibly lose your license, pay for a lawyer, and pay higher insurance rates for years.

Personally I would rather take the one time payment option any day.

If bars cant stay open late - they cant. I have no problem to go home at stated time. And you are confused. Mix up the whole thing. I am talking about corruption and crocked cops who takes bribes to enable certain venues to stay open. That is not how a civilised society functions. When the legal system is not functioning and defending ALL its citizans on equal basis - then it is a serious problem. You dont know what you are talking about and obviously seem to defend both drink and driving and bribes. What other crimes do you think should be sorted out between the policeofficers hand and your wallet? Amazing point of view you put forward - but I guess there is a protector for every crazy idea.

Simple solution for you. If Thailand is not a civilized society enough for you. GO HOME and stop complaining!

"When the legal system is not functioning and defending ALL its citizans on equal basis - then it is a serious problem."

And you think the system is fair and equal in say the USA? I have one word for you "OJ". Where money and good lawyers do their deals behind closed doors.

Just remember that your activities of trolling around NANA for girls would be against the law in your own civilized home country. If you are such a moral guy, you should not be doing the same type of "Illegal" activity in Thailand, and furthering its decline as a non-civilized country.

yup, I agree, even tho it is a bit of a pain to get stopped.. the B100-500 fine is cheap by comparison, no check to write, nothing on your record, etc.. sure makes life simpler, but they don't have all these college grads that need jobs writing tickets, collecting the money and depositing the cash, reconciling the bank account, etc.. all these bureaucratic jobs that make the 'modern' world go round

While I believe that there is absolutely NO excuse for drinking and driving, or people getting away with it, I do also believe that a system that facilitates resolving certain conflicts with an amicable financial settlement is... convenient.

Nothing amzing, or odd about that point of view - while I haven't had to resort to such amicable solutions, I do find having them available, in certain instances and certain cultures, makes for great conveniences.

While I agree the corruption in Thailand can certainly be handy at times, I can see something in Jojje’s point of view. Sure it is easy for “us” to get away with things by paying a “small” fine here or there. But to the average Thai that “small” fine is a days pay, and therefore the average Thai does not benefit from the system as it is in Thailand. For some that is OK – because who cares about the average Thai anyway, for others they see a problem with the system because it does not make things/life better for the average person in Thai society.

Everything is relative – even in developed/civilized countries there is corruption and the super rich can work the system and grease the wheels. But in Thailand the gap between the super rich and the average Thai is pretty wide, hell even the gap between the middle class Thai and the average Thai is pretty damn big. So the system in Thailand works fine for most of us Farang. But for the average Thai it must surly suck to watch the “rich” Farang or even the “rich” Thai get off by passing a few baht to the police.

While I am at it lets talk about how this corrupt system effects the late night openings as well. Sure a club/bar can pay off the local powers to stay open and that can be a good thing for the late night drinkers. The problem is that it tends to be inconsistent. One night/week/month all is well and the payoffs go as planned and the bar is able to stay open. The next night/week/month there is a kink in the works and the bar has to close down on time. As the patron there is no way to know until you show up if they will be open or not. As an owner/operator there is no way to defend yourself against erratic closing times should the powers that be decide to make you close – especially if there happens to be some competition between local police divisions or even the Army based upon where said bar is located. If said owner has paid up for one week/month or late night openings and they get closed down at the "normal" closing time during that stretch there is nothing they can do. So corruption generally leads to inconsistent closing times, and little to no avenues for conflict resolution by the owner/operators related to such.

Again, I certainly gain from the system being the way it is, but I do not think the average Thai does.
