Thornny, It might be cool to see, but watch it on TV, as you will not be able to even get close to Sanam Luang park, where it will be held. The funeral ceremonies last from Oct. 25th-Oct.29th, with the actual cremation on the 26th scheduled for 10pm.
Just at that location they are expecting about 250,000 people. There are 9 locations around Bangkok there funeral pire replicas are being built for people to lay flowers and pay respect, and there will be big screen TVs everywhere.
This is basically the biggest event in modern Thai history, so do not expect anything to be open on the 26th, out of respect, except hospital emergency rooms.
Every foreign ambassador, all the Royal family, every high level corporate executive, and every high ranking government official, with all the hiso families, will be attending, with another 200,000 regular Thais just at sanam luang park. It is going to be a very sad day throughout the country.
They are now setting up a funeral pire replica at Royal Plaza and expecting another 300,000 people there. There are 8 other locations around Bangkok being set up too, with each able to hold at least 100,000 people, with the appropriate roads closed.
Security will be extremely high, and not the loonytoons bib portrayed in writeups. This is the real thing. If you go to sanam luang you will go through at least one checkpoint, with a complete pat down, you will be checked two more times depending how close you get.
All the roads close to the different locations are closed, the river traffic is restricted, with no river taxis stopping at the 3 piers close to the park. Basically from October 1st until October 30th the whole area is closed off, meaning the Grand Palace is closed and The Emerald Buddha grounds. They are cleaning and remodeling everything in that whole area.
If you do attend at any of the locations wear all black, or dark grey. No shorts, and wear a collared black shirt, not a t-shirt. Like I said, this is the most important event in Modern Thai history.
The King was on the throne for 65 years, the longest serving monarch. The queen of England is getting close, but not quite there yet. The whole nation loved him, so do not say anything, even jokingly, that could be taken the wrong way about him, or it could get bad for you.
If you need female company that day, you better make arrangements before hand, or you will be out of luck, and even then it will be questionable if they show up.

Luckily my flight gets in after 5pm and my next flight is not until the next day at 5pm, so maybe I can get something in the morning rather than at night. The specific details were announced 3 months ago. The King died Oct.13th last year, with the mourning period traditionally lasting one full year until the cremation. This was known, just the exact date of the cremation wasn't published until 4 months ago, when they started building the funeral pire.
People have been going to pay there respect to the King starting one week after he passed, with over 6 million people attending so far.
Basically if you are staying on sukhumvit the roads will be empty, except for a few taxis. You might find a few black, russian, and poor Thai freelancers, but don't count on it. Most all Thai working girls will be with their families for at least the 25th-27th.
No business will refuse to let their workers off for this event, as the backlash would be very bad for them.
People are not going to be driving around. They will be at home with family watching TV, or at one of the sites. The only site I have seen being setup so far is at Royal Plaza, and there hasn't been a list posted in English yet of the other locations.
This is a big auspicious event. More so than some Buddhist holiday. The whole country will basically be shut down on the 26th out of respect. This is not just another funeral. This is a historic event that affects all of Thailand. Thais will not want to be seen by others as showing disrespect in any way at all.

I only found out the cremation day last week. And I did not know how big of an event this was going to be until I looked at the schedule. And I trust Thais will not want to do anything remotely seen as offensive, I can completely understand that. I did know it would be about a year, but I figured the end of the month would be safer, but I guess not.
I am well aware this event will be more auspicious for Thais.
I was in Thailand last year also just about a month after the Kings passing, everything was as normal, but that was outside of Bangkok. In Bangkok I am sure things will be much different. Could be interesting walking around the city that is almost deserted. A different experience.
Black and Russian are ok for me, and I'd probably opt for Black because I think they will be more well behaved then the Russians. I have had my dealings with a couple of Russians before. Service overall was not good.
And I still have the morning and early afternoon the 27th to play. And I might try to use the online escort services, maybe someone will be working.
