China Sailor
'Ai' in Chinese means 'Love'. When I am in SGGirl's good graces she will address me as 'Ai'...

Skip,
No, it was not me interpreting, my sister in law who is from Issan told me that my girl had referred to me as a stupid goat to someone on the phone. I asked my sister in law to say in Thai, and if memory serves me, she said something like "...phae khlao" = "stupid goat", but as usual, this stupid goat was full of beer, shitfaced with my brother, at the time.
I guess context is important, for instance while my sister in law was offended on my behalf, this girl & I often call each other names in fun, she may have said something like "....yes my stupid goat is pissed again" who knows?
Dear All,
My thoughts on knowing more Thai insults in Thai was not to use them myself, but be more aware of what might be said around me. Maybe that's paranoid, but it would be fun to catch some of them out sometimes.
Cheers,
Liam

So using Ai with a female or using Eee with a male would probably be considered insulting?

No, E is considered lower than Ai and only used in the cases described above (used between equal adults it is not polite). So in some cases females will be referred to as Ai as well.

BTW there is another pronunciation of Ai (in a higher tone) which in the North and NorthEast means Pee (as in older brother) and shouldn't be confused with it.

In same way it can be confusing to listeners unfamiliar with pronunciation the Chinese-Thai Hiya (Pee) and the extreme insult Hia (monitor lizard).

My advice: Don't try these at home.

My goodness, macaler. I think you mean,

Hee khun men mak

Hee is the subject, followed by khun, who possesses the hee.

Unless you mean to say "You are a smelly c***" rather than "You have a smelly c***" (or "Your c*** is smelly")............ But I think you mean the latter, don't you? Either way, your sense of romance is totally intact. Any woman would adore you after such a gracious compliment.

Recap:

"Tom's dog" in Thai would be "ma Tom" (dog Tom) or more formally "ma kong Tom" (dog belonging to Tom, or dog of Tom). If you said "Tom ma" according to the English structure the only meaning it could have is "Tom is a dog" instead of "Tom's dog".

Next lecture time tba. Enjoy your recess. Yawn.

Nom Yao maak maak.

The list is endless and often relates people to some form of animal,, Chaing yet etc etc.

Being called a Buffalo ( Kwai ) didn't really worry me until someone explained it was very rude and deserved an appropriate response. ( Phom mai kwai, phom kuay klai klai kuay kwai, puu chi kuay klai klai kuay nuu).

The most common semi-insult I hear in bars is " Hello dargling,,,, using the foreigner common darling with a slight "g" added to form the Thai word for monkey ass.

Personally I think a list of compliments / sweet talk, would be more usefull.

Your tits are very long? That's an interesting one! I suppose it could also be a compliment in some circles.

Personally my favorite insult for a chick is 'ee-meut' which hits to the core of every girl's most shameful trait- how dark her skin is.

On a related subject, I was happy to see that my tirak's new 'talking-dic' contains such useful works as asshole and f***ing. f***ing, interestingly enough, was translated into Thai as meaning many things, including 'nah-bua' (boring). I told her it was probably a good idea NOT to say 'this is f***ing' when something is boring her.
