Interestingly enough Thai is rated for English speakers one of the hardest languages to learn.
Sure the grammar is not that complex and in fact not that difficult at all but the tones are another issue.
Many of the sounds just dont exist in English so you almost have to learn to talk again to speak properly.
And anyone who thinks that you dont need to be able to read and write to learn the language properly is seriously deluded. Sure you can learn to speak without reading and writing but it is so much harder and you dont realise what you dont know.
I can speak a bit but I am barely at survival thai as my pronounciation is very poor.

Not true at all. My reading and writing is mediocre, but my speech is excellent. Learning wasn't hard at all. I guess best methods differ from person to person.
Surprising how these people speaking hardly Thai know how to learn and speak it.

Yeah, I wonder how well you do in Thai, German and Dutch? No need to convince you. Just ask around.
Furthermore, it's not necessary to 'master' a language. Getting understood is the main object here.
Now tell me, with all your knowledge and excellent language skills, how much Thai do you speak after all these years?

I could list a myriad of ways I have NOT learned Thai. Nothing has worked so far, but I don't find my failing terribly onerous: I know the very basics - the polite words, numbers, basic directions, etc., and for me that pretty much suffices: it's not like I'm a GFE sort of guy.
A real handicap for us visitors is the inability to stay in practice when at home. I always have the best of intentions - books, tapes (back in the stone age), and CD's lying around, but I usually only start cramming a couple weeks before the trip. Even when in-country I found I don't get a lot of practice: I took a classroom course last time and found that, being almost pathologically anti-social, that was about the only time I talked much Thai.
Perhaps some of my problem is a deep-seated loathing of the Thai language. This hatred seems to have coalesced right around the time I found out my name means "vagina".
