I keep an old voided credit card to leave in hotels when they request it. I don't trust anyone in Thailand with my financial information. When I use ATMs I only choose the ones that are directly connected to a bank. This requires more legwork for me but i'd rather be safe than sorry. A lot of those small ATMs you see everywhere can have cloning devices attached to them or the workers can fool around with the modems. This is less likely to happen to the bank atms.

I think you have more or less answered the question I was going to ask. Where are the safe ATM's?

Why should a bank be any safer ?

How about the ATM's on the BTS stations ?

It's a high visibility area with security up the ass and there are cameras all over the place around banks. Plus the machines usually have to be refilled and checked from the inside of the bank. Unless the banking staff is in collusion with data thieves I think it's a much safer option. With the smaller ATMs there's just more possibility of screwing around with the internals or attaching cloning devices. With that in mind nothing is 100% safe in Thailand.

I don't even trust those.

Mr Daddy
Not a problem for me as I'm a cash master without a card. Even in England though they have had problems the past year or two with people screwing with the ATM's of the biggest banks, including Lloyds, Barclays and HSBC. Hell knows how the scam works but the banks have issued information regarding the appearance of "risky" ATM's. It seems somebody has found a way to scan cards inserted into the slots and install cameras to the top right of the keypad to capture PINs. I shit you not, I would have passed the information off as minority report material if I hadn't recieved a similar warning at a HSBC ATM in my hometown. The ATM in question (on the Strand in Torquay) warned of "loose" card something or others, not sure what else they said but it sounded worth avoiding.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 30 May 2006 :-

Mafia spending big on in-flight duty free
========================
Singapore - Organised crime groups are exploiting the security loopholes of in-flight shopping and running up bills with stolen or fake credit cards, a news report said Tuesday.

Fraudsters are well aware that card sales terminals on planes are not live or linked to the banks via a phone line like terminals on land, The Straits Times said.

In-flight transactions cannot be immediately verified with the bank or credit card company.

"There seems to be a syndicate that operates by travelling on short, busy flights making purchases with fraudulent cards," the newspaper quoted a stewardess as saying.

Airlines and banks do not always pursue such cases vigorously as they are constrained by the hassle of dealing with overseas law agencies.

However, a Singapore Airlines spokesman said the airline has security measures in place on board.

One measure used by airlines is a list of black-listed card numbers that onboard terminals will automatically reject. But while periodically updated, the list is unable to filter out all unauthorised purchases, cabin crews acknowledged.

Airlines typically have an on-board transaction limit of 600 Singapore dollars (379 US dollars) to 1,000 Singapore dollars (632 US dollars), the report said. Any bigger purchase must be verified by the in-flight attendant by satellite phone.

But some passengers use two or more cards to split the bill so that it will be within the limit, the paper said.

That's an old trick. That is one way to spend on your maxed out credit card.

Travelers' checks are still the safest way of carrying money - and the cheapest as well, assuming you belong to a program that waives the Amex fees. If you visit a cashing point that does a lot of TC business, you shouldn't have to wait more a few minutes for your money (I never have and I've cashed a lot of TCs in BKK over the years).

I also use one of those prepaid debit cards that function like credit cards as a guarantee at hotels. I "top it up" with sufficient funds to settle my bill, but don't use it again until my next trip. Even if the card number would be compromised (never happened to me, but I realize it could), their would be no funds and the transaction wouldn't go through. If I'm in a "high-risk" country, I don't "top it up" and only use it to gurantee the room, then settle the bill in cash.

I also have an ATM for an Internet bank account in which I keep emergency funds. Normally I only have a few hundred dollars on deposit, but could transfer more in via the Net if needed. In BKK, you'll avoid the chance of ATM by using "safe" ATMs as outlined in a previous post. But if things went to hell, their wouldn't be much in the account (it only requires a $20 minimum to keep it alive).

All in all, you're still safest using TCs.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 27 July 2006 :-

Credit card skimming rife at top tourist spots, police warn
========================================
Police are advising credit card users to be more cautious when using them at major tourist spots following the arrest of a criminal who stole electronic data through tapping of phonelines used to confirm payment. The information was then sent to Malaysia and used to make fake cards.

Pattaya, Hua Hin, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son top the list of popular tourist destinations where credit card fraud has recently been reported.

Caution is also being urged in Ayutthaya, Sukhothai and certain areas in Rayong, Trat and Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Businesses accepting cards are told to ensure they see some identification from foreigners presenting credit cards for payment and to make copies.

Police spokesman Pol Lt-Gen Achirawit Suphanphesat said many foreign tourists have complained of fraud to their credit card issuer.

The police warning follows the arrest of Thosapol Chaowanawut, 42, in Bangkok on Tuesday.

He was found to be using equipment to intercept the modulated signals containing the sensitive data which is sent from a terminal to a bank for verification. The information was recorded on MP3 players.

Mr Thosapol was identified as a member of a credit card fraud ring run by Malaysians. He was hired to skim the information through use of wire-taps and send it to Malaysia, where the bogus cards are made.

Tourism Police made the arrest after being contacted by banks in Hong Kong and by Visa International. They found wiretapping equipment in his home in Phuket.

It was estimated he stole data from more than 10,000 credit card users, resulting in losses totalling more than 400 million baht.

It is reported that Malaysian authorities have arrested a Canadian national with 2,000 credit cards in his possession, many of which contained data stolen by Mr Thosapol.
