Jingjo,I hope the Financial Information Center is correct in its projected assessment of the value of the $A because I hope to be in Thailand from late Feb to early April,2010. As well as making overseas travel cheaper for Australians a strong $A will reduce inflation as imported goods will be cheaper, and thus make it easier for the Reserve Bank to limit interest rate increases and maintain economic growth. However, predicting currency rates is much more an educated guess than anything approaching an exact science. A stronger $A very much depends on commodity prices continuing to rise. The recent rise in iron ore and coal prices has been largely due to China significantly increasing its stockpiles of these minerals with the easy credit made available by the Chinese government as part of its massive stimulus package. If the expected global recovery, and in particular the USA recovery,is weaker than China anticipates its reduced exports will result in a reduced demand for commodities, lower prices, and a weaker $A. There are just so many variables that any long term prediction of the value of the $A has to be taken with a very large grain of salt.

here is a great piece of info.... can you imagine if the U.S. defaults on their debt? It is a parasitic relationship where no one can scew the other. The huge amounts involved would COLLAPSE most countries while the good 'ol U.S. grows enough food, has enough energy etc. the be one of the only ones standing. What we don't have we have the military might to take. So for all those nut jobs that think the $ is screwed, tell that to all the countries that are holding u.s. dollar debt. http://www.treas.gov/tic/mfh.txt

tvn,the appreciation of the baht relative to the $US is not something the Thai government welcomes as it makes Thai exports less competitive. However, reduced returns on US Treasury bonds, very low US interest rates, and the huge US government debt largely being financed by printing money is likely to result in a lower $US. Although a lower $US is not good for US citizens travelling abroad,it it does make US exports more competitive and,in the long term, this will strengthen the US economy by making the US less dependent on foreign lenders. Just how low the $US will fall in the next year or two is very hard to predict. If there is a severe worldwide recession the $US will rise because it is still regarded as a safe haven in times of financial uncertainty. But if there is steady worldwide economic growth I think there will be a slow, but progressive fall in the value of the$US.However,I doubt it would decline to as little as 25 baht to 1 $US in the next 2 years.

KBank weakens baht forecast to 34.25 Kasikornbank (KBank) has cut its exchange rate projection to 34.25 baht to the US dollar by year-end. The move is in line with the low policy rate, as it is a government tool to stimulate the economy this year, said Kobsidthi Silpachai, head of capital market research and markets business. KBank previously forecast the baht would depreciate to 34 to the dollar this year. In the first half of this year, the Bank of Thailand cut the policy rate twice to 1.5% in order to support the economy amid volatile currency exchange rates and weak exports. Mr Kobsidthi said export value had improved a lot after the second rate cut in April, while new bank loans that usually benefited from a low interest rate had marginally expanded. "We found export value expanded 16 times higher than the growth of new loans after the rate cut," he said. More...
