I had a bit of a sore throat, so I thought it would be good to have some hot soup. I thought about the soup served by the street vendors, but have not mustered the courage to ever try it (I have had spring rolls, curries, and fruit from street vendors). I remembered seeing a Japanese Ramen restaurant while walking near Asoke, so I decided to try the place out. I assumed that Ramen was a soup similar to the stuff sold in the West, and I was correct. In this particular restaurant they also have other dishes besides ramen soups. I had the basic Ramen, which included some vegetables and lean pork slices (not mentioned on the menu). Of course, ramen noodles were included in the soup. It was very good, using top quality ingredients (not always the case in Thailand). I don't always like Japanese food, but I think most people would like this place if they wanted a large bowl of soup. At lunch time, the place was filled mostly with Japanese businessmen wearing ties, so it must be fairly decent even by Japanese standards. The price was right, about 130 baht for a large bowl of soup that would be a good lunch for most people. Ice water is included for free, and I could see that they pour it from a large jug of drinking water (probably because of the largely Japanese clientele.) I forgot the exact name of the place, but the sign says "Japanese Ramen Restaurant" and it is right next to Big Mamma's Pizzeria on a side soi just off Soi 21 (Asoke). This is the first side soi that connects through from soi 19 to soi 21. Recommended.

For me, trying the various hawker stalls selling the soups is one of the highlights of Bangkok. My favourite is the one which pitches up on Suk Road, at the junction with Soi 33. Not the one ON Soi 33, but the one actually still on Suk Road. Evidently it's one of the only places where you get a special isaan variant of soup and noodles in Sukhumvit. My TGF introduced me to it a few weeks ago, and I go back 3-4 times a week to refil. Awesome stuff. A kind of mixture of normal soup and noodles, and Chinese Hot and Sour soup. More thick and rich than u usually find. 30 baht. Lovely jubbly.

My favorite place for street food is in Chinatown. Just about anything that you can imagine, and a few things you can't imagine. But the food always seems to be very good.
