Has any tried Vientiene Kitchen on soi 36? I took the tirac and her best friend for dinner there on Saturday evening and really enjoyed it. Quite a big place, with a nice atmosphere generated by a band playing isaan music with the occasional traditional dance.
As is always the case in Thai restaurants, I let them order. We ended up with a bizarre range of dishes including some fried pork thing, a dish comprising wok-fried ants eggs (TGF tells me they are big ants that live up in trees in Isaan!), chicken knees (I didnt ask), soup and a wonderful deepfriend fish that she took great delight in feeding me (wrapped in a leaf of some kind, with chillis, lime, garlic, onion and sauce added to make a little parcel).
Great food and a real change from normal thai food. The girls loved it. I think I paid about 1400 for those dishes, some deserts and plenty of drinks all round, including two large beers for me.

My bodyguard #2 loves those deepfried fish. We haven't had them there, but other places.
Was thinking of trying this place, now I definately will.

I'm also becoming a huge fan of Thai oysters and love the way the Thai's eat them with lime, chili, onion, garlic slices and that wonderful green herb/plant. Is there anything better than the feeling you get when a cute, caring Thai girl lovingly prepares one, you assume she's going to eat it, and then you realise that it's for you?
Can you imagine farang gfs doing that? My arse, you can.

Oh, I forgot to mention. We also ordered the deep fried frog. It tasted ok, but the little bones made eating it a bit of a trial.
As we were leaving the Boys in Brown turned up. Interestingly, the same two turned up at Great American Rib on the same soi, the following night.
I assume they're doing a bribe payment run.

I went to this place in May 2004 and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Had ant egg soup and some other dishes that I was a little leery of but they ended up being quite tasty although I don't know what the hell they were. Loved the decor, a bit of everything.
Is deep fried frog anything like deep fried soft shell crab?
Where do you get the Thai oysters? They sound great.

So true!!!no farang GF would ever do that. I had a girl break off individual pieces of corn off of corn-on-the-cobb and hand it to me.
I have been to that restuarant as well. The girls love it. I ate those ants right off the tree up in Issan (my TGF said the ants on the ground are dirty but the ones in a tree are clean) They are very tart and as long as you bite them first, everything is fine.

Where do we get the oysters? My friend, they are EVERYWHERE! Any thai restaurant - particularly those with a bent towards seafood - will have them. I've had them at that restaurant in the middle of soi 22 beer bars, soi 7 seafood place (opposite Beergarden), and (my favourite place at the moment) that open air restaurant in Silom Village at Sukhumvit 23.
Often times, I'll be in a bar on soi 22, feel like an oyster and one of the girls will run off and bring some back to the bar.
They're not cheap by Thai food standards (usually around 40-50 baht each), but it's a nice treat now and again.

If you turn right at the Vientiene Kitchen and go about 2 minutes walk, you will find Ban Lao Restaurant (0-9772-6905). Ask for Mrs Nang. Same general style as Vientiene Kitchen and really good Issan food. I've been to both of them, like them both. Most dishes very spicy.

The only strange thing about the place, you will probably see a guy surrended by 3 cute TGs feeding him no-hands style... that will be Koolbreeze.

I would even easily defend the thesis that the food at Bane Lao is much better than in Vientianne Kitchen. But there are times Bane Lao cannot accomodate all interested persons, so Vientianne Kitchen is a nearby alternative.
