Check out SukhoThai on Suk, soi 24, in the tiny Camp Davis mall, next to the Davis Hotel, opposite the President Park. The food is exquisite. I was first taken there by a hi-so TG who also adores the place, so the place must be pretty authentic Thai food. I am a big sucker for soft shelled crab and this happens to be the specialty of the house. The soft-shelled crab with fried basil and chili’s is just to die for. Also on the yummy-list: - giant prawns with fried garlic and fresh pepper - all their curries - fried beef with cashew nuts Their herbal drinks are bloody exceptional as well. The first one with Bale (?), which is supposed to help the digestive system is my favorite. (I hope this doesn’t backfire on me like my first ever post about Sazanka resulted in me having to book in advance now, but this place is just amazing. They deserve the business and anything for fellow BTF members.)

Please tell us the prices of food at this Sukothai place. Looks like upmarket. We need to know if it is within our budget to go.

stayed at President Park on my last trip and had lunch at this place. I was really surprised by the food. It was really good. Should have gone back for dinner, but as you know, when you are in BKK, you just keep finding one new thing after another. Very rarely you can "go back" to anything you that you swore you would go back- that includes that girls you swore you would go back to bf, but you always met another in the next 30 minutes that you just could not go back to the first one. Ah, life of a busy ( but happy) tourist in BKK !

"To die for." It's such phrases that made you look swishy on the thread about drinks. Food's good. A bit longer of a walk from the BTS station than I'd thought, but it was a relatively cool evening for Bangkok. You sure this place isn't in Nonthaburi? Sheesh. 250 baht for their big appetizer sampler: deep fried soft shelled crabs, fried/breaded doughnuts made from ground shrimp, chicken that'd been baked in banana leaves, and some grapefruit salad in the middle. Can't say I've ever had softshelled crab. Tasty stuff. Had the deep-fried whole frogs from a street vendor just before that too. Also good (and cheaper). Similar taste. 170 baht or so for a red curry with duck. Very rich. Quite tasty. Delivery of the rice (30 baht) was fun. Guy comes out with a basket layered in banana leaves, full of rice. He then doles out a portion onto my plate. A *small* Singha was 100 baht. I was thinking of getting the herbal drink just to try it, and he told me it was tea. He then re-suggested a beer as he'd done when I sat down. 594 baht total. I was amused that even with a 10% service charge included (which to my recollection was 64 baht - go figure) they still broke up my 400 baht change into 3 100's and 5 20's. I've almost come to like the idea of a service charge being stated on the menu, as it formalizes their demand for a tip. If you're going to demand it, then tell me about it in advance and just put it in the bill. If not, live without it. That said, it was higher-end service, with thai men dressed up with sashes tied around their waists. One kept coming over to empty out the beer bottle, and they were attentive. I was disappointed at the shared toilet facilities. One has to go outside into the Camp Davis complex, where one finds TP at 5 baht a pack and cigarrette burns on the toilet seats. I expected to have to fend off some mincing prat trying to give me a massage while I took a leak.

I went there the other night too. Before I say anything I should point out that the evening had got off to a really bad start. The girl I was meeting - my number 1 TG - had just thrown a wobbly because she had found a discarded packet of birth control pills on my bedside table. Quick as a flash I came up with an excuse. Errrrr.... I mean what the f*** am I going to say? "Their mine" Yeah it didnt work. Then we had the inevitable questions. 'Who is she?' 'She's no-one really' (actually she did know her but best not to admit it) 'What's her name?' 'random name' (actually I chose 'Elle' - I was a bit flustered) Then we had tears - silence. Followed by the usual blah blah blah... 'What am I doing here?' 'Give me some respect' 'No-one has ever treated me like this before' By this time I had decided the evening was ruined and suggested she go home to 'think'. This didnt go down too well and she insisted we go to dinner. Now dinner with a pouting TG is not exactly my idea of fun but what could I do? I mean telling her to f*** off home is adding insult to injury. So I gave her a kiss and said I was sorry. To be fair, I was genuinely sorry that I hadnt spotted the pill packet before she had. I then handed over a present I had bought her - a Tamagotchi. Well actually I had bought it to send to my daughter in England but this was an emergency of sorts. A tip: Buy a few Tamagotchi and hand them over to TGs as presents. They love them, they name them after you and send you hourly reports on their progress. Warning they are quite complicated so please ensure that your TG at least has the IQ of the average 8 year old. Ok so.... my point is that I really wasnt in the best of moods when going to Sukhothai - tears tend to blunt your hunger. I was keen to try this place - not because of Hypershade but because he had been taken there by a hi-so Thai. (Incidentally, this is not meant as an insult to Hyper - it is just that I guess I trust his taste in nightclubs and TGs more than his taste in food and alcopops.) Actually I should have remembered that trusting hi-so Thais over Thai food is a mistake. You see, most hi-so Thais that I know, dont eat Thai when they go out because they eat it everyday at home. My guess is that hi-so TG took Hyper there because she thought he would be impressed rather than because she particularly liked it. You see Sukhothai is a 'royal thai cuisine' place along the lines of Baan Khanitha, Blue Elephant, Lemon Grass, Baan Rim Pa and the better Thai restaurants in the 5 star hotels. You can spot it as soon as you see the place - essentially you have a faux traditional thai setting in the middle of a modern mini mall. The waiters are all dressed in some vaguely traditional Thai outfit. The food is served in whicker baskets, with banana leaves and carved vegetables. There was traditional Thai music in the background - in fact, if they had a little more room I am sure that we would have had a traditional thai dance show. I cant remember but I bet they gave us a knife and fork to eat with. Now I have nothing against this food and I realise that it is extremely popular especially with tourists as it resembles the type of thai food they get at home. The clientele were nearly all farang - unfair, perhaps, because I came late. These sort of restaurants are always extremely highly rated in magasines like the Big Chilli and Bkk Metro - but they are simply not my style. Incidentally, the sort of place it is, explains the 10% service charge, the splitting up of change etc. Sort of goes with the territory. NOW, I have to admit that, with all my initial reservations, it was a lot, lot better than I expected. The menu is very large with a lot of interesting and 'different' dishes. I really didnt get a chance to try them, there were only 2 of us and TG is 37 kgs and eats like 'meaow dom' so by page 3 of about 10 I had already ordered enough. Better try this place with at least 6 people. The food we ordered - soft shell crab, river prawn, thai pork salad with fried egg - was way better than I expected. But it was just so difficult to drum up much enthusiasm what with Tamagotchi beeping and TG close to the edge. Definitely a good place to take clients - I will give it another go when I am in a better mood. Needless to say, make up sex aint as good as it is cracked up to be.

(1) This is so very true. And if they are going to eat something Thai they will take you to a very obscure unpretentious place where they will swear by a very specific strange dish that they say is the best made in Bangkok. Most of the times, I wouldn't be able to go back to find these places without help -and not sure I would even want to try going without one of my local friends. (2) Very true also regarding the style of these type of restaurants. Most of these upmarket "royal thai" places are mostly for the farang crowd. However, some that are for the most pedestrian crowd (locals) can be quite good and with very good and tasty food. There is one in Wittayu between Chidlom and All Seasons Place that is always full at lunch time (only time they open). There you will find "royal Thai" cuisine made for Thais. But beware you will not find a menu in English and nobody working there speaks a word of English. Though very unpretentious and not the place to bring a girl you want to impress, the lunch food is good. I do prefer the "other" taste of Thai cuisine. The one found at places like Baan Klang Nam or Cafe de Laos.
