My TGF buys milk (infrequently) from 7-11 in small cans, about 1/3 the size of a Coke can. It's real milk, and doesn't require refrigeration until after opening. To the best of my knowledge, it's not "evaporated," "condensed," or any of the kind of stuff you see in western markets in cans. Just plain old milk, pasteurized and canned to prevent spoilage in a hot climate. Anyone out there drink this stuff? - Balls

Nestle Bear Brand milk in the 140ml can is what l think you are referring to, has a shelf life of one year. Tastes okay, l keep a small supply upcountry for cereal and coffee. You can get regular or low fat. Do you know why a lot of Thais buy it? As a present for someone sick in hospital. Westerners buy flowers and fruit, Thais buy a couple of 6-packs of Bear Brand milk. It's considered a good present for someone recovering from an illness.

Milk is indeed widely available along with yoghurt but not that much butter, cream or especially cheese. I have always been a bit suspicious of all this as I have rarely seen dairy herds in Thailand and there is an awful lot of "fresh" milk which keeps an awaful long time..... Never mind. The major companies like Chokechai (who I understand no longer have any dairy cows) market milk on the International standard coulour scheme. Dark blue for pasteurised, light blue for semi-skimmed etc. then a bizarre range of sweetened, semi-sweetened etc. Dutch Maid is quite good for yougurt and even have sales girls who traipse round the offices in Bangkok selling it direct. Drinking yougurt is also very popular but is very sweet and would never be confused for milk. I am still having an argument with a friend. What is in non-dairy creamer and non-dairy ice-cream?????? Wall's is a leading company in pork products and ice-cream. Is there a connecetion?

I am not sure what is in the non-dairy cream or ice-cream you are talking about, but in the USA Soy Milk, and Soy Ice-Cream are now widely available. I think they taste pretty good and last a long time, but they do have lots of carbs. Some Soy Milk that is properly packaged does not need to be refrigerated until the package is opened.
