Thanks for the replies everyone..... to clear up some confusion.... the oysters I have had before are indeed smoked oysters. They came in a can. I should have mentioned earlier that those were smoked. But thanks for the warning on flooding and its impact on environmental pollution. The last thing I need is food poisoning when on vacation! I have read the menu of the oyster bar and thanks for telling me that those oysters are indeed imported. Any advice as to which imported ones are the best. Btw, if the oysters of Thailand are now polluted due to floods, are the ones used to make hoi Tod (Oyster Omelette) also affected? I remember having one of these last year and it was fine. Although I did struggle to get the "delicate" flavor of the oyster (which I think was overpowered by the egg and oil!!!)

It is considered that cooked oysters are not dangerous as heat generally kills the nasties that cause the damage.

Man 10 days of hell on seafood posioning? I thought my 4 days in Krabi was bad- Bottom line is squid is often bleached to preserve - And This USA Oyster.....Is not always the case- Prawns (shrimp) Kung are often left in sun and flies vomit on them only to be iced later and prosented as fresh quality international fare- Sure the risks are maybe 1 in 20 or say six with oysters- But you get the bad deal serving its hell on earth as in (shoot me please) I suggest go some place that carters to rich Thais like Police chiefs politicans- and generals- Where quality is more likely- I aint going there again thats for sure

Just to clarify things.... I am an Indian working in a middle east country. Lots of seafood here except oysters! The oysters available for sale here are ridiculously expensive and I dont trust the level of "freshness" claimed. So yea..... eating oysters in bangkok would be an experience for me.

... if it is local, and it is Thailand, and it is an oyster, it is suspect. ... unless your hoi tod costs THB 1,500+, you may assume it is not made with imported oysters... as Adventure Guy correctly cites, other than heavy metals, most of the nasties oysters harbor (coliform bacteria, hepatitis viruses) are easily killed by cooking... but, there is just something about eating cooked coliform bacteria, even when properly cooked. ... I'd pass on the local oysters this trip.

When I lived in a village situation - large amounts of chilli to help move passage fast through intestines helped- I also had a shot of whisky to nuke what snuck through- Thais have by nature a better resistance it seems to contaminated food- Its just That bad seafood is not like bad curry etc- That shit - oysters has to be pure as really bad ones can kill. The guy here who did ten days of Hell is not alone in his accounts of what they do - I had eaten oysters here for 12 years before back in 2007 I got some bad arsed ones in Krabi- First came the uncontrollable vomit and loosing all body fluids out the bowels- Then the ear ring pitch with fever and loss of consciousness- chest pains and breathing problems- It was 4am when the hospital guys said accute food posioning and hooked me into drips and full works- Stomach convulsed violently- and I kept passing in and out of consciousness- Even after 48 hours I was still f***ed- It took over 5 days to recover and I dropped 12 pounds and $2000 dollars in bills- I am too scared to do oysters anywhere anytime again- Raw or cooked - But odds are all our warnings will not apply and you will be fine- just keep in mind the bad ones can really nail you

... cited earlier, ground zero for imported oysters in BKK is The Oyster Bar... raw oysters are their main line... if they don't do great oysters, they don't have a business... dive in... you will not be disappointed. ... be sure to knock off a few of the Blue Points.

If you can find them, and I doubt you can anywhere in Bangkok, the best oysters in the world are from the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, they are called Olympa oysters. You can find them in jars if they are imported into the speciality markets. They are small like the blue points, but have a much better flavor, coming from the colder waters of the Pacific NorthWest. French, or any other Mediteranian oyster, doesn't even come close flavor wise.
