I once went out to see how much I could get for $1US, which was 45baht at the time. I came back with a barbequed fish, some barbequed pork in a sweet orange sauce with sticky rice, two strings of small sausages, some watermelon and papaya slices, and I still had 5baht left over!

leaford, yeah, when in BKK staying with my TGF, we always eat like that, rarely spend more than $1 or $2 USD for dinner, etc. Really economical, and tastes great! Never been sick from the carts, though I do buy cooked stuff, not the raw pork that some of the Isaan pepople really like (don't want to get liver flukes). Nice benefit is that it's a great social scene, my TGF doesn't have to cook in the apartment, and I get to learn about lots of new dishes and local vegetables/fruits. - Balls

Oh, I have good memories to food carts, specially to my first trip when I had my steadie in Karon Center. The food cart there looked so funny with the red lights and the dried sepias moving in the night breeze.

Can thoroughly recommend the carts and food stalls as well as the temporary setups in car-parks and such. Unbelievably delicious food and ridiculously cheap. Could eat like a King for 3/4 of f_ck-all. Oh, and never experienced any sickness of any description.

I'm actually a great fan of the carts and I visit them regularly and with enthusiasm. Great food, tasty, cheap and easily digestible. But I also don't quite trust the Thai's honesty when they tell me it's all Beef or Pork meat on the grill. So let me just switch into cynical mode for a moment, and maybe spoil it all by asking the innocent(?) question: Why can you so often see these fatted, ugly dogs close to the food stalls, dogs that nobody seems to like or care about??

That's no way to talk about Thai women, Fritz! Seriously, I doubt that the meat they are cooking is dog - I have sampled many of the different foods on offer and I am quite certain that they are mainly beef and chicken. My Thai friend is very particular about what she eats and there is no way she would buy meat from a cart if she knew it was dog. As to who owns the dogs - it is very hard to tell. I think they may be old strays who hang around the cart and look for scraps. But all of the ones I saw were always asleep! I wonder where the young dogs are? Maybe they are all pets in someone's homes.

The dogs are usually stray but pretty well looked after - just look at all the plates of food lying around at night. Afetr all to most Thais they might be their dead grannie or something re-incarnate. Only place i know where "dog" is eaten as a matter of course is up around UdonThani - and I only know that coz an ex gf came from there and told me they ate dog regularly. Mind you on one trip to the Isaan I saw rats, frogs, and all sorts on food stalls - so who knows

After all this positive talk about eating off the carts, does anyone have any bad stories? I usually eat the local food, and have never had a problem before, but having the trots for two or three days of a week in BKK would really suck. As I get older, I'm less willing to spend one day completely drunk trying to get over a local bacterial affliction. Drank the local water in the P.I. one time and had to spend an entire day within ten feet of the crapper. Aggie
