Ah, well, you see, that's the confusion Lads. There's a diference between "french fries" n' "chips", isn't there? If yer after a "filet (always pronounce the 't') and fries" then you should head off to the fast food places. However, if you want "chips" with yer fish then steer away from "french fries" and head for the delicious, fat, crispy-on-the-outside-fluffy-on-the-inside, politically incorrect Chip! No comparison really, IMHO. Cheers

French fries are the thin one which are sold at McDonalds. Chips are the English (thicker) version. Why should you pronounce the 't'? It's french, the 't' is silent.

Because filet is French, whereas fillet is English. And the correct pronunciation of fillet in English is with a hard 't'

So basically in short... "Fries" are those fantastic spud-based foodstuffs akin to those sold at McDonalds... whereas... "Chips" are the thicker delectable spud-based delicacies akin to what we in the U.S. usually refer to as "steak fries."

Not sure how much "spud" is in yer french fry mate! Also, yer chips 'specially when accompanied by a fish (my pref' is a haddock incidentally), should really be eaten off a white paper wrapped in a newspaper. Any places in Bkk serve F&C in a Bangkokpost? Cheers

The only fish - which may be consider as F&C is Icelandic Cod. Yum Yum. The boys from Hull have to steam 48 hours North to catch them - as compared to 24 hours some years ago. Ambrosia. Edit in: Best "spuds" come from Idaho.

Brack - regarding chips- are they supposed to be soft & undercooked on the inside? Seriously - F&C was one of the delights of living in Scotland - that & Chinese take-away. It seemed like there was a F&C shop next door to every pub. F&C takeaway - a pint (Tennants or McEwan's) & some darts. You are livin' large baby.

With a side order of gob sized pickled onions and a couple of wallies. My office colleague's dad made a fortune selling F&C from a chippy in Sandwich Kent. UKP.

Never forget the wallies! Like never forgetting to pronounce the 't' in Agincourt It's what separates a great actor like Laurence Olivier from rubbish like Kenneth Branagh. PS Can we have our half of France back sometime soon

"My office colleague's dad made a fortune selling F&C from a chippy in Sandwich " Ah, the chip sandwich or more correctly the Chip Butty! Usually a soft buttered roll (not only sold in Kent) that accompanies the F&C (with or without the wally, pickeled egg etc.) filled with chips by the buyer. Woe betide any F&C shop serving person should attempt to fill the said roll themselves! Cheers PS. Am I allowed to post here about deepfried Cadbury Cream Eggs, Snickers Bars etc., that would also form part of a F&C supper?
