I have to agree though that the USA beef is much better than the Oz one - which is too dry. Japan was unable to get US beef before, but they got it back now - and they know what good beef should be like!

Have not had US steak for a long time so cant judge on it. If people like it - fine! I am sure it is good if folks say so.

But I must also say that I really like Australian as well as New Zealand beef that is imported to town! Excellent taste at least for my mouth!

OK,,best to begin with Parochialism, Firstly notice it is NOT spelt with a Z ( Zed).

An Aussie will give a higher markfor OZ products, the French think they have the best wine and cheese and most Americans basically think EVERYTHING in America is the biggest and best, annoying everyone.

Back to beef,, THE best piece of beef I ever tasted was a Japanese aged Washu Scotch fillet cut. I believe the Japanese refer to these cattle as Kobi and we here in Aus use Wagyu for this breed that we have been cross-breeding into our heards for decades.

Few other than the ignorant or overtly arrogant could argue that the Japanese or the perveyors of fine food.

I am a sucker for lamb. if there is aussie lamb available I almost always order it.

I found thaidups remark funny, why it is so tender. it was a Joke and I took it as one.

now, what ya say mel, if you bring us 2 nice aussie wagyu steaks next time.

I'll pay and we cook them at toxic's infamous kitchen.

I don't want to sound like an arrogant American, and I am not an expert in the taste of beef from various countries, but the reason that Japan imports such low volumes of US beef has to do with the ban on US beef by the Japanese government in December 2003 because of Mad Cow disease.

Mad Cow disease was found in Canada and spread to just a few animals in the US that were quickly isolated by the USDA, but once a country's beef has been banned by the Japanese government for safety reasons, it takes a long time to recover in the eyes of the Japanese public even when allowed back into the country. Imports to Japan of US beef are now starting to recover since the last ban was lifted in July 2006, but it will take a long time get back to previous levels. There have actually been several bans of US beef, the latest ban was for a simple violations such as finding a (healthy) veal backbone in a shipment (Japan bans all backbones, brains, and similar parts from entering the country).

The 85% share of Japanese imports of beef that the Australians now have is not based on any perceived preference based on taste or value by the Japanese. Before the ban, the US exported about $1.3 Billion of beef to Japan in 2003 and the US had about a 30% market share in Japan.

Even now, only US beef under 20 months of age (and therefore less suseptable to mad cow disease) may be imported to Japan. Most of the U.S. beef supply is not be eligible for export to Japan, since only a small percentage of cattle can be identified as 20 months of age or younger.

30 times per head of population more than the United states of Arrogance.
