Here's DF's review a few years back.

Quote: from Deep File on 6:36 pm on May 31, 2004
1. Scoozi - best Italian in Bangkok for my money, and reasonably good ambience. Superb foie gras, very professional service. Obscure location on Soi Bamphen.

2. Antonio's - Spotty, and the shophouse ambience can be a little rough. The mezannine is better than the ground floor, unless you can get the booth at the front window. Tony definitely tries hard, (overbearing might be a better word) but he hasn't hit the mark yet.

3. Caldarezzo - a dog. Now (mercifully) closed, I believe?

4. Gianni - second only to Scuzzi, except when the owner lets his golden retreiver into the dining room to roam around. Eccentricity pushed too far

5. Giusto - On Suk 23, not 19... near the Tai Pan hotel. More about trendy than about solid performance on the food. Moderno ambience is distracting and chairs so uncomfortable that even good food wouldn't bring me back.

6. L'Opera - no surprises. Italian for the undemanding. Demonstrates (along with PanPan) the importance of being "first to market" and a prime location.

7. Pan Pan - even fewer suprises. Uninspired formula Italian prepared to Thai taste, with desert bar for the kids. 20 years with the same menu items... no Italian spices permitted on the premises.

8. Zanotti - overrated... ambience very authentic but quality on the food side is thin. It's important to like crowds if you dine here, and be flexible about service.

9. Bella Napoli - great pizza (and pasta) in a breadbox space, if that's your thing. Crowded... there is often a line to get in.

10. Toscana - simple "trat" operation with decent food. Pastas are the best bet... can be loud. Some game on the menu like wild boar. Great tiramisu.

11. Lino's - very similar to Toscano but even simpler. Excellent homemade pasta with specials featuring imported ingredients like Italian mushrooms. Could use some customers... especially at lunch.

**How can 3 different Italian shophouse restaurants (all breadbox size) survive on the same soi? What is this, North Beach?

12. San Remo - sterile environment offputting, but decent food.. pizza-with-the family type place and pizza is the best bet. Antipasto bar is disappointing...

13. Mabeba - started out good but has declined. I would now rate it as ok at best... interior designer should be hunted down and shot.

14. Paesano - see L'Opera above except the patrons are from the surrounding embassy district. More proof that most diners are undiscerning about both the food and the ambience.

15. Limoncello - very good at what they do (mainly pasta and pizza) but too cramped for my taste. Whose goofy idea was it to design round menus the size of a large pizza that are almost unreadable?

16. Zanzibar - Italian in name only... food memorable, but for the wrong reasons. The only good thing about the place is the parking.

17. Fino - food uninspired, but great location in the heart of Suk 33. At lunch, you are likely to be the only patron. I wish this place was better because it's so handy.

18. La Gritta - better than you would guess from the appearance of the place... handy to Country Road.

19. Hotels - every 4 and 5 star hotel has an Italian venue... it's an unwritten law. Several are pretty good (La Scala/Sukolthai, Grappino/Watergate, Giorgio's/Sheraton, Biscotti/Four Seasons) but better suited for expense account dining; wine prices always extortionary. Spasso is a notable exception; appalling food and in-your-face-bad service... dance venue yes, restaurant... no.

A tasty Italian equation - Fresh ingredients plus a relaxed ambience and friendly prices equals a winning combination at new bistro Esca
=========================================

Born into a large family in the restaurant business, Woranee Wisuttinun inherited culinary smarts from her parents and relatives. Having travelled around sampling delicious cuisine with her family since childhood, she knows what good food tastes like - and how to create it as a cook.

With family members already running noted bakery Coffee Bean by Dao, French restaurant Lyon and Japanese eatery Yasashii, Woranee has just opened Esca, an Italian bistro on the third floor of Paradise Park mall.

"Whenever they went to restaurants, my parents took me along, so I had the chance to ask lots of chefs about recipes and ingredients. Up till now I've never taken cooking lessons, preferring instead to experiment as I go. Luckily, the people around me are food connoisseurs who give useful advice," says Woranee, who has plans to study French cuisine in France.

Esca bistro opened just three months' ago to satisfy those with an appetite for fine European dining but in cosy surroundings. Although situated in a mall, the eatery is tucked away in a quiet spot away from the boisterous action. Decorated in earth tones, the interior is furnished with comfy black sofas and leather chairs plus marble tables, while brown ceiling lamps warm the ambience further.

"I like Thai, Japanese and Italian food," says Woranee. "I discovered that there are no Italian restaurants around here - and I know that lots of people are hungry for Italian fine-dining but in a friendly ambience at reasonable prices."

Don't expect to see the young owner greeting guests as they arrive; she is usually too busy with her frying pan in the back.

Though relatively small, the menu manages to pack in a good selection of European cuisine, from appetisers, soups and salads to sandwiches and hamburgers as well as pastas, main dishes and desserts.

For an appetiser, Woranee recommends the New Zealand green mussels in garlic tomato sauce for Bt180. She makes the sauce herself by blending fresh tomato, onion and garlic with basil and other herbs. Another musttry is the tuna salad (Bt280) - seared tuna tossed in paprika, salt and pepper and served with rocket in a balsamic dressing.

Moving on to pasta, a delectable dish guaranteed to suit Thai palates is the spicy sausage spaghetti (Bt220). Woranee stirfries German sausage with garlic, shallots, onion and dried chilli, taking care to cut greasiness by using as little oil as possible. The sausage is slightly spicy and tastes similar to our own northern Thai counterpart.

For something rich and smooth, try the creamy prawn fettuccini (Bt240), Woranee's special blend of creamy tomato sauce and parmesan. No frozen seafood is used, with the owner insisting on fresh tiger prawns for their firm texture before finishing off the dish with a flourish of salmon roe. Penne, linguine, spaghetti and fettuccini are among the choices of pasta.

For a main course, we suggest the roasted pork chop with mushroom sauce for Bt360. Utilising sweet, rich and juicy blackpig pork, the 300350gram chop is seasoned with pepper and salt, seared and then roasted rather than fried. Mushroom sauce complements this meaty treat perfectly and it's served with sauteed mushrooms and mashed potato. If pork's not your thing, how about the wagyu ribeye steak with red wine sauce for Bt680, or the snow fish steak with tomato sauce for Bt460?

To round things off, Esca tempts diners with desserts that should please Thai tastes by not being too sweet. Among the choices are tiramisu, choccheese waffle, and homemade crepes with vanilla ice cream. Prices range from Bt160 to Bt180.

.......................................................................

Esca Bistro is on the third floor of Paradise Park on Srinakarin Road. It's open daily from 11am to 10pm. Call (02) 787 2338.

Bliss @ El Patio Building, Sukhumvit Soi 31
===========================

The only factor that leaves Bliss a bit short of being the most popular Italian restaurant in Bangkok is its location. Situated in a condominium at a deep corner of a zig-zag soi, this 35-seat restaurant owned and run by chef Sa-nga Janjuang - who used to work at several top restaurants including Guisto, Harvey and Zanotti - basically can't be faulted in terms of cuisine, ambience and service.

From the 50-item menu, cappuccino truffle mushroom cream soup (290 baht) - pleasantly light in consistency and subtly rich in taste - is best to start off your meal.

I recommend that you try the uniquely concocted but universally tasty pan-fried foie gras with cinnamon tamarind sauce (750 baht). Laced with five tropical fruits, the dish offers a refreshing balance between velvety rich goose liver and a sweet, tangy fruity flavour.

An ideal choice for red meat is slow-roasted veal medallion with port wine reduction (980 baht). The super thick-cut veal tenderloin steak, flavoured only with sea salt, intermingles marvellously with the rich sauce.

Pan-fried John Dory with truffle sauce (490 baht) is one of the restaurant's best-selling main courses. This seafood dish offers a nice way for the guests to enjoy the imported fish and truffle soup in one go.

For dessert, go for WBC, or "Wow Bliss Chocolate" (380 baht). Featuring vanilla ice cream in a hard, ball-shaped chocolate case, it stands on a rich berry sauce. When served, orange liqueur is poured over it and it is flambed before your eyes. It definitely deserves a series of "wows" for its dazzlingly bizarre presentation, generous size and, most importantly, marvellous taste.

Capri @ K Village, Sukhumvit Soi 26
=======================

Capri is a newly launched, stylishly decked out Italian restaurant that seems to be born gifted and blessed with prosperity.

With 10 years' experience working in top restaurants and hotels in Germany, Dubai and Thailand, Capri's head chef, Karsten Seyfrey, is a rising star of the culinary word.

Capri's menu is extensive with almost 100 items prepared with top ingredients. All the meat and seafood used are chilled and never frozen.

Don't miss Capri's pizza, which comes directly from the restaurant's professionally constructed brick oven. One of the most-ordered choices, proscuitto crudo, or Parma ham pizza (360 baht), promises to delight pizza connoisseurs with the thin crust pizza bread spread with tomato, mozzarella, mascarpone cheese and rocket leaves.

Of the main meat and seafood course, I highly recommend grilled snow fish kebab (645 baht). Looking and tasting pleasantly uncommon, the dish features nice cubes of the fish with crispy coating, made with garlic, parsley and breadcrumbs, on skewers _ a deliciously well-rounded dish that deserves a thumb up.

Red meat, too, was worth the applause. The grilled Australian rack of lamb (680 baht) features lightly seasoned and very succulent racks of lamb that intermingle perfectly with fragrant and tasty ratatouille and flawless mashed potato.

For dessert, the homemade apple strudel with vanilla ice cream (145 baht) _ a subtle combination of light, flakey and buttery puff pastry and soft, sweet and tangy cinnamon-spiced fruit _ is the dessert guaranteed to nicely wrap up your meal.

Italy in Ekamai - THIS NEW BISTRO CATERS TO DISCERNING YOUNG GASTRONOMES
=============================

Not to be confused with Zalute, a Mediterranean restaurant on Sathon Road, Salute opened two months ago to cater to the younger generation of Bangkok gourmands in the Ekamai neighbourhood.

Setting-wise, the Italian venue is decked out in an urban style with black and gold hues as well as some lounging tables and has more of a wine bar ambience than the feel of a ristorante. Very popular is the lovely al fresco dining area located on the restaurant's front terrace.

Salute's menu, designed by a team of Bangkok's highly respected Italian chefs and veteran restaurateurs, was quite extensive with almost 100 items on offer. And one of the restaurant's best selling starters, Parma ham salad (320 baht) kicked off our dinner nicely. Thin-yet-sizeable slices of the salty cured meat came laid on a bed of rocket leaves with parmesan cheese, melon, black olives and balsamic dressing.

The salad intermingled marvellously with the very popular Salute pizza (440 baht), which is another item nobody - whether a pizza fan or not - should miss. Served hot with rich, almost-bubbling cheese from the wood fire stove, the pizza was made according to a secret recipe and featured barbecue sauce, mozzarella, bacon, ham, salami and onions on a crispy thin crust. Truly delicious.

If you're chilli-tolerant, check out the restaurant's favourite starter among Thai customers - spicy sauteed mushroom salad (180 baht), which I found flavourful but fiery hot.

Salute's pasta menu offered 10 choices of preparation and sauce to be matched with your preferred noodle style - choose between penne, spaghetti, squid-ink, fettuccine and angel hair. I skipped the likes of creamy garlic prawns, pesto and spicy vongole sauces and settled for the more tempting crab sauce (425 baht) which presented a whole mud crab with some of its meat tossed in the cream.

Best with the squid-ink spaghettini (40 baht extra for black noodles), the creamy crab sauce with its mildly sweet flavour and hint of white wine was truly addictive and offered a very nice texture.

For main course, there are fish, beef and pork dishes on offer. I tried the best-selling main entree, pan-fried snow fish with mashed potato and sauteed spinach (450 baht), and was very pleased.

The slightly seasoned fish nicely yielded a crispy exterior while its interior presented a silky, oily and naturally sweet character. The fish was accompanied well by a tasty lemon cream sauce, buttery mash and sauteed greens.

Salute's steak, too, was no disappointment. We ordered the rib-eye (690 baht) and found that the rather-thin-but-large slice of the imported beef, grilled to perfection, was top-class. The steak arrived with super crispy french fries, pan-grilled vegetables and a salty red wine sauce.

Last to arrive but not least enjoyed were the BBQ spare ribs (590 baht) - something a ribs connoisseur can't afford to pass on. Delivered to our table was a full rack of ribs generously laced in pungent sweet and salty barbecue sauce. Also served with french fries and coleslaw, the professionally grilled, well-marinated ribs offered flavourful and succulent meat that fell off the bone easily.

Salute did as great a job on the desserts as on their savoury dishes. I could hardly keep my spoon off the creme brulee that featured a brittle face, with a silky, not overly sweet custard awaiting underneath.

The service was pleasurable. Some of the well-trained staff members were very helpful with their suggestions, and our glasses were always kept full.
