mr. alan,

first of all, drop the mr., that's just silly

texas hasn't been a republic since 1846

at least try something before knocking it, jeez !

1. Sorry about the "Mr". When I joined this forum years ago, every name seemed to be taken, so I added Mr to my name and it worked. I am not as creative (or whatever) as you in coming up with unique forum names.

2. What do you mean Texas hasn't been a Republic since 1846? That is blasphemy, and in Texas we shoot people for that kind of talk.

3. Even though I admit that I have not been to Los Cabos Grill, (not in Thailand at the moment) I have tried all the other Mexican food places in Thailand that have been recommended over the years on this forum, and although some are edible (which has some merits) none of them could pass for Mexican food anywhere in the Southwestern part of the US or in Mexico. Maybe it passes for Mexican food in Southwestern UK, I don't really know.

Same goes for Indian, feeding that shite in India would get you sent to the Eastern front

btw didn't the Yanks just simply annex Texas from the Mexicans?

When are they going to give it back?

I would never shoot you in LOS. I would only do that in the Republic of Texas, where I would be acquitted by a jury of my peers.

Have not tried Silver $. Any Mexicans work there?

PS: I would never eat Thai food in the US if I walked in the restaurant and there no Thai's working there, because it would taste like shit if that were the case. I think you can figure out the rest yourself.

There are quite a few Indians in BKK, and no Mexicans that I have ever seen, so I am not sure that is entirely accurate. If you think Indian food in BKK is bad, then all I can say is you have never had real Mexican food cooked by Mexicans (whether those Mexicans are in Mexico or in the US or wherever). Of course, you have to have a minimum number of Mexicans (or Mexican restaurants) in a country to create enough demand to import authentic Mexican spices, chiles, etc, and to have tortilla factories, etc.

You seem to be a little confused about Texas history.

Mexico claimed Texas as their territory, but they did not really occupy it to any large extent, so it is wrong to say anyone stole Texas from Mexico, any more than the US colonialists stole the US from England when the US declared its independence.

Texans fought for independence from Mexico and became a Republic in 1836 before the US got involved. In additions to persons of European decent living in Texas, almost all Tejanas (persons of Spanish and/or Mexican decent) living in Texas at that time supported the Republic of Texas succeeding from Mexico.

After the US annexed Texas, the Mexican-American War ensued and in 1848 the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in which Mexico sold Texas (and other lands which now comprise California, Nevada, Utah, and most of Arizona, and parts of Wyoming, Colorado, and NM to the United States for USD $15 million.

Not me. Never been there, but I did study Hindi language in college and took some other courses about Indian politics and philosophy. I now spend most of my time in the US, where many Indians come to work in the IT business, and I also work (via email and IM) with many IT workers who are located in India.

I would guess that, although Indian food is somewhat different in India than in the US or BKK, it is pretty close if the Indian restaurant is actually run by Indians. Of course, there are different types of Indian cuisine, which varies between regions.

This is another thread that should be closed down, else the FBI claim it is pornographic.

... firstly, Alan, the FBI wouldn't know a breakfast chalupa from a whole side of cabrito... leave the policing of Mexican food cuisine to guys who KNOW what they are doing (Texas Rangers, relying upon leads from snitches, as you and me and other patriot of the noble jalopeno).

... as you, I am a Texan who misses a late night Mexican fix, or a barrio breakfast to ease the pain... as Texans, you and I both know that authentic Tex-Mex is largely unavailable outside of Texas... it is highly regionalistic, as are California Mex, Arizona Mex, interior Mex, Southwest Mex, et al.

... so... what to do?... we live in a corrner of the world where many of the basic ingredients in Mexican cuisine (beans, sour cream, cheeses, haas avocados, corn meal based breads, etc.) are not native... Asians do not naturally favor these exotics, nor are these ingredients generally easily and inexpensively available.

... even if your Mexican grandma opened a joint here offering the really good stuff, it might not rise to the standard to which we are accustomed.

... consequently, few Mexican food restaurants prosper in Asia... their only real chance for opportunity is in trade areas with a significant international population... either Western tourists, or resident Westerners, or in the case of Bangkok, both... hard for them to survive on locals only.

... so... while we got what we got, please do not call on the authorities to shut down "pretenders" to authentic Tex-Mex... they do serve a useful purpose.

... and in the case of Los Cabos, it is actually quite a bit better than just getting you through the night Mexican, and CERTAINLY better than going without... they do use fresh and authentic ingredients, although mixed into the California mutatation of Mexican, rather than the more noble Tex-Mex variety for which we purists long.

... when the drug of choice is unavailable, adapt... improvise... it ain't Rosaritas in East Austin or J&L Cafe down in old El Paso, but it ain't that bad either.

Sour cream is not an ingredient of Mexican cuisine. That is a USA invention to substitute for the real thing.

Mr Alan
magnum, I agree with most of what you said. There are plenty of other food options available in LOS (including decent Vietnamese, Chinese, Indian, Italian in addition to Thai food), but I can see that if someone actually lives in the LOS or is there for a very long time then one may need to accept whatever is available in the way of Mexican food. But since I don't live there, and the longest I have stayed there at one time is 30 days, I can do without Mexican food for that long.

Although Mexican food in LOS is pretty mediocre, if you want something really horrid, try Italian food in Japan.
