That is interesting as my doctor has me: 1) Taking a Uric Acid supressant to reduce the Uric levels in my blood to fight symptoms of gout -and- 2) Drinking 2 glasses of red wine a day to boost kidney function which is silgitly reduced as a side effect of the medicine. BTW: You still have not answered the question: Are you a gas, gas, gas; or was Mick lying...

Back from Moulin the Somail... think thai government should give some kind of subvention to french visitors coz it really doesn' make sense to us to eat decent food drinking anything else, but wine's sure a costly luxury over here. 6000bht total bill for two, well over half of it for a single bottle of wine. I think next time I'll come over i'll bring a whole box of the liquor !! Went to check Villa in Lang Suan and they indeed have a nice choice, except they're strangely lacking on the Cotes du Rhones. Quite popular in France though. Is it acceptable in Thailand to bring Ur own wine in the restaurant?? Sounds like very impolite but started to love getting drunk on the stuff and would rather not spend 30 000baht for it.

One of the best wine shops I know is Mondial Vins Society Anonyme on Ruamrudee. There was another very nice wine shop on the edge of Siam Square near the University but I believe it relocated and DIDN'T TELL ME WHERE!!! <<burp>>

It is not only "acceptable" to bring your own wine, it is positively routine. Corkage fees vary from 200-500b, depending on the venue... a few places are even free. Moulin de Sommai charges b300, which is about average. No one who enjoys wine with meals and appreciates value can be comfortable ordering from restaurant wine lists in Thailand... the vast majority are not only overpriced, they are also poorly chosen. (In fact most restaurant owners leave the selection up to their distributors). The Thai government assesses both duty and excise tax on wine... at extortionary rates that total almost 300%. This makes the landed cost of wine high to begin with, and then wholesalers take their cut and restauranteurs add the "standard" 2X+ markup... the result is unaffordable wine. Wine is targeted as a luxury item (consumed primarily by tourists/expats) so it is viewed as an easy mark for high duty/tax. It does not seem to occur to these clever gov't decisionmakers that if wine duty was lowered there would be vastly more consumption with resulting higher total revenues

Indeed, thank you, Deep File. What then are the best destinations to do a visa run and return with a suitcase full of wine, acquired at reasonable prices, of course.

Cool! perhaps we'll meet up in Le moulin de sommail then when it's time to down those bottles U should double check the info about pricing there, as it's only haveheard from me. About the restaurant, it might be the biggest in South east Asia only actually but there's a story about the owner tere having bought a significant part of "La Tour d'Argent" wine collection when they were in financial difficulty. Hard to believe the fine goods moving from one of Paris most famous restaurants to Ventiane, but we now are waiting for u to report on the place (I'll try to get the name this week)
