BJC... Interesting comments, and yes, even if I say so myself, some NZ whites are quite superb, especially the Sav.Blancs, if/when you see it, I can very strongly recommend "WITHERS HILL" - makes marlbourgh look very ordinary - Astolab, served on Air NZ Biz. flights also not bad - but a query, I likewise am fond of an Aussie red, particularly those from the Margaret river region - but I find by and large, when drunk in Thailand, they dont seem to taste as good ?? - I have a theory that some wines dont travel / or more precisely, react a little when faced with high altitude ?? - [perhaps I should sea freight them next time ] also as mentioned, the huge local tax does little to help, meaning poor to average wines are priced in the Gold medal wine bracket. Interested in your thoughts -

Gents, Changing gears for a minute ---- Curious which beers are popular with the locals. I was informed by some Thai Army blokes that Singha is more the "tourist" beer and Leo and Chang are more the common man's beer. Any comments or debate on Chang, Singha Lager, Leo, Thai, Carlsberg (yes, I know its from Denmark), etc? I really like Carlsberg, but only place I saw it readily available was in Pattaya. Did they close down the brewery recently or is it just not that popular in BKK? Also, I was told its pronounced "Sing", not "Singha". But when I tried ordering a "Sing" at the gogo's at SC and NEP, the girls didn't seem to understand me unless I said "Singha". And of course they didn't carry Carlsberg..... Comments? Cheers, - B -

Babaganoosh,, Being an Aussie I was raised on beer ( yes my mother put beer in my baby bottle, maybe that explains some of my life,,LOL ). Anyway,, Having tried Singa ( pronounce sing) in Thailand,, it tastes like SHI*T,,, nearly as bad as Fosters ( yes we tell all you OTHERS, it Australias best so YOU drink the crap,, no-one here drinks it). Leo super is quite nice but needs to be VERY cold,, almost at freezing point. My favourite is Chang,, great flavour, good kick. In fact because I put Heineken in the same crap catagory as Fosters when I visit a restaurant the first thing I ask for is Bia Chang,, if no beer Chang then SEE you later.

MG, thanks for the feedback! Last time I was in Oz was 2001. Wasn't much to do in Townsville outside of working hours. I do admit I never tired of looking at all the big-tittied country gals walking around the mall after hours. Anyway, two beers I got turned on to were Carlton Midstrength and Castlemaine XXXX Gold. Basically drank myself silly on those and ended up crawling in to bed every night of the trip. How do these 2 beers rank in your book? Cheers, - B - P.S. Sydney has some really gorgeous gals too. I consider myself a Asiaphile, but Aussie gals hold a special spot in my heart.

Nice and 200BHT a bottle are conflicting statements !!!! The import tax is about 60%,,, shipping, mark-up etc at least 70 BHT so what you are saying is Spain can produce a good wine for around US$1,,, seems unlikely. But as always,I could be wrong. I was in LOS in January and was offered a Thai wine,, smiled as my brain thought ( here we go viniger coming on ) well to my surprise it was quite good,, it was a Semillion but forget brand name. Cheers
