i eat everything on the street that is freshly cooked. I don't eat raw meet, fish or sea creatures, because I know I have a sensitive stomach. exception: sushi at zen. food is very healthy and clean in general in los. I got sick only once eating fish on the beach at a restaurant with almost no guests, eg turnover. my bad.

TJ Eating raw or under cooked pork can give you worms, the tablet they take every few months kills the worms. You will feel the little buggers tickling yr arsehole if you have them. I am not sure if you can get them with other raw meats/fish.

Stopped by the pharmacy, and asked them what I should take. They pulled out something called Zentel; albendazole, 2 tablets, 200mg each. 35 baht for the package, which means a thai probably pays 10. A pity I didn't notice that it says "one dose" up in the corner of the package. (I had forgotten what the pharmacy had told me). Instead, I asked a local, who in typical thai fashion gave me the wrong answer with a straight face: "only need to take one." According to http://home.intekom.com/pharm/smith_kb/zentel.html Zentel "is indicated in the treatment of single or mixed intestinal parasites. Clinical studies have shown albendazole effective in the treatment of Ascaris limbricoides (roundworm), Trichuris trichiura (whipworm), Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm/threadworm), Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus (hookworm), Taenia spp. (tapeworm) and Strongyloides stercoralis." I don't see trichina there, which rings true with the last time I asked a doctor about treatments for trichinosis. (I only recall that the treatment was not simple) Oh well, I'll probably pop the remaining pill and hope for the best.

Actually, one of my favorite eating places is on the street in Chinatown. They set up tables on the corners and have some very good seafood and fresh vegetables. And when the bill arrives, I feel a little guilty because it is so damned cheap.

Hi guys! I've read almost every thread here, but I couldn't find the answer for this question: I'm planning my first trip to LOS (esp. BKK) this year, and of course I want to try out the lokal food. From all I've read here in this great forum, I think that Thai food is in general very spicy. Unfortunately my mouth (and body) is quite sensitive about spicy food. I sweat about 1 liter of sweat and my mouth burns like hell, when I chew something really spicy. It's not nice. So my question: Is there a way to tell the guy/gal at the food stall, that I don't like it spicy? Thanks for your replies and greetings from Germany! Erdinger

Erdinger, If you are with a TG/BG just tell her no spice. By your command, Master. Also, not spicy in Thai is "mai phet" pronounced "my pet". Not all dishes are spice either. Many have no spice. I love spicy food and they always disappoint me on the spices. Farang no like spicy they think. Have fun!!

In some Thai places, they have a menu for non-spicy food.

Thai food in BKK is not as spicy as you think. A few dishes are spicy, but they are usually labeled as such on the menu, or if you are at a food court you can see the dark red pepper flakes, or the long whole dark red peppers. If you do bite into some very hot food and your mouth is burning, eat some ice cream. The chemicals that make peppers hot are not water soluble, so most drinks (except milk) don’t help much. For some reason, it is hard to find spicy Chinese food in BKK. I am talking about Hunan and Schezwan style Chinese food. Most of the Chinese food in BKK is Hong Kong style or some other style which I find fairly bland. This confuses me because the warmest parts of China are supposed to have the hottest dishes, and BKK is even warmer than southern China. In the USA, almost all Chinese restaurants serve some Hunan and/or Schezwan dishes, and many restaurants are specifically labeled in their name as serving food from these provinces (Hunan Garden, for example). But I never saw a Chinese restaurant in BKK dedicated to Hunan or Schezwan style food.

Thanks all a lot for your help! When I attend a RT for the first time, the first round of is on me! Now I'm no more worried about getting the wrong (spicy) food by accident. Is it possible to get used to spicy food, and if yes how much time will it cost (average) ?
