A Foody
Yeah, I like the Pastry Shop at JW Marriott Soi 2 - they call it BANGKOK BAKING COMPANY. They have a small a la carte menu for lunch too - good stuff - and in the evening they serve draft beer and pizza at the outside terrace. A visit is in order - as Bernhard Trink used to say....

Landmark gets my vote. Robinson and Foodland have great pastries too. My particular favortie is Yamazaki in Soi 15 Robinsons. This is next to the bag check-in counter. There is a quite college girl in a cute little Hello Kitty uniform that is always smiling. She knows me because I buy at least two chocolate eclairs a day.

Best eclairs next to my grandmas. My grandma, G-d rest her sould, was the best eclair baker in Chicago so I do know what I cam talking about. Yamazaki uses the right amount of custard (Thais are good with custard thanks the Portuguese, amongst many other legacies-ie those beautiful Central Thai girls). Coco is perfect and the dough has the right moisture.

Cheers

For real French style patisserie, I have found nothing better than Folies. They have two locations:

- Folies Cafe 1912 at La Alliance Francaise, 29 Rue S. Sathorn 02 679 2056
- Folies Boutiques 309/3 Rue Nanglinchee 02 286 9786

(I am copying from one of their printed menus)

I am having breakfast there almost every day. Best croissants I have ever had in BKK (I guest made with French butter).

They have all kinds of breads and pastries and viennoserie. And very good prices. I quote only a few from their menu (sorry it is in French).

VIENNOISERIE
Croissant 17
Croissant aux amonde 24
Brioche 17
Pain au chocolat 24
Pain au raisin 24
Couque aux mirabelle 24
Feuillete au thon 24

......

BAKERY
Baguette 30
Batard 45
Pain paysan 45
Pain aux lard 50
Pain de mie 60

......

PASTRIES
Tartellete aux citron 45
Tartellette aux poires 50
Tartellette aux cassis 50
Amandine aux oranges 45
Millefeuille a la creme 37
Truffade au chocolat 48
Eclair cafe et chocolat 48
Opera 50

And there is much more: cakes and sanwiches made with real good bread.

Really worth a try if you are in the area and you like good bread and pastries.

FIB
1) Café Lenotre on soi Langsuan (one of the best bakery in France, enjoy the privilege to have it in BKK...)
2) Oriental Bakery (WTC, Central Chidlom, Emporium and at hotel of course)
3) La Boulange on Soi Convent (though not as good as before unfortunately)

I also have a particular fondness for the cakes offered at the Opera italian restaurant on Sukh 39.

On a side note (and I am French), I find Folies just average, not at the level of La Boulange, for example.

I walk by La Boulange often and it always draws my attention. Problem is that when I am in that area most of the time is not breakfast or snack time.

FIB, you having tried and having compared them, I believe you about La Boulange being better than Folies. Yes, Folies is average when compared to really good French bakeries. However a decent average (authentic) French bakery in Thailand (like Folies) will often be better than many of those snobysh ones located or associated to top international hotels -like a few of those named before in the thread (JW Marriott, Oriental-Emporium, Landmark -the ones I have tried. Yes, it is easy for a real French bakery to be better than Folies.

I haven't had breakfast yet. I think I will try La Boulange. Besides, MN told me is good for girl-watching at noon. Hey MN, if you recommended me La Boulange a couple of days ago, how come you didn't mention it in this thread and instead mentioned the one at the Landmark -which I find mediocre.
