Abrak
I was there last night.

It is located amongst those restaurants in soi ruamrudee - Wits, the Circle etc - which seems to be a death knell for restaurants.

It is basically on 3 floors of a shophouse. An industrial cement look, it is a combination of wine bar and restaurant. There is also a DJ playing basically chill music.

To be honest the food is very good, sort of nouveaux cuisine and there is a great choice of wine. the place seemed to be missing something in terms of atmosphere and the chairs are pretty uncomfortable. I will certainly be going back but I am not sure whether it will join my list of regular restaurants.

I ended up going and Abrak's report covers most of it. I will say that the wine selection for the cheaper wines and the RP rated wines was 'Sorry, we no have, sir', which kind of frustrated me. The food was GREAT. The atmosphere was very chic and the wait staff didn't stand there and stare at us which I don't like. The bathroom situation was kind of weird. Where you washed your hands, practically everyone in the restaurant could see the wash basin and you washing your hands which was kind of weird. They could also see you leaving the stall if they were positioned right, very weird I thought. But don't let that detract from the overall experience.

Oh the chairs were kind of uncomfortable, but the cuisine more than made up for it.

Perhaps it's my advancing age, but I don't think food that is simply "good" ever makes up for poor ambience and uncomfortable chairs. I understand that "chic" and "understated" are catchy buzzwords in the industry, but these terms are often used to mask poor taste. The moderno/minimalist interior at Bacchus comes off as cheap in my view... bare concrete floors, pale sandstone walls, bare formica tables without linen, injection molded plastic chairs, gimmicky menus the size of a personal assistant.... with disco music on the pa system. Equally problematic is the air conditioning, which was not engineered to keep the rooms comfortable (ceilings are very high). In short, their website is more appealing than the restaurant.

The menu is fairly well rounded, and I found the food to be above average but certainly not memorable. Foie gras was fresh... but needed another minute in the saute pan and was served on a slice of rare eggplant which is a poor pairing in both taste and texture. Rack of lamb was good, and correctly grilled with a side of mashed potatoes and undercooked (therefore inedible) garlic cloves. The wine list is more extensive than most, with fair pricing (Grant Burge generic Barossa Vines 2002 shiraz is b1,400) but difficult to navigate and read because of the undersized binder format. The bread basket (an important indicator) was truly pathetic - one small dry piece of inedible French baguette.

As Abrak notes, the history of Ruam Rudee Village is mostly one of failed enterprises. Circle continues to survive (despite being very poor) but clever ideas doomed to failure seem to be the norm at this location. I would predict the same fate for Bacchus, after the novelty wears off.
