Place: Intercontinental Hotel, Bangkok
Cuisine: Covers the bases of grilled dishes
What I had: 200g Argentinian filet, med-rare w/peppercorn sauce, some English mustard (1200bht). Side of spinache au gratin (190?bht). Appetizer: French onion soup (250?bht). Wine: Free bottle of bordeaux (special offer if you pay with Amex platinums issued in Thailand).

The restaurant:
This upscale restaurant has only been opened 1.5 months. The decor is beautiful with a touch of chic. Tables are placed strategically to give each table a kind of intimate feel. The wine selection is extensive. The menu includes a myriad of grilled fares. From a wide selection of beef to Phuket lobster at market price.

The staff here is very fluent in English and VERY friendly. They even made sure to come over and strike up some current events conversation with me when my friend excused himself to the lavatory so I didn't have to sit there staring at the wall.

The French onion soup was great. It relied more on the onions thant the broth and cheese/bread. There was only a touch of cheese on the 4 garlicy slices of bread on top.

The filet was PHENOMINAL. Cooked just right. I've only used English mustard on my filets one other time and didn't recall if I liked it. Man, it sure finishes the taste of a good filet just right. The spinache was a great 'accomplice' to this meal. The wine wasn't so hot, but it had good intentions. And hey, beggars can't be choosers, right?

The head chef I believe is American as I heard him speaking orders to the Thai junior chefs.

Although I hear the New York Steakhouse is supposed to be one of the best grills in Thailand, I would have to suggest that before making this decision you have a go at the Fireplace Grill.

I will definitely be visiting here again.

I luvvit; I was so sad during the renovation, because I used to eat here once every few weeks with a few work colleagues, and it is one of the few western restaurants here I really enjoy...

but now better than ever!

Bangkok's METRO Magazine is publishing it's "High Five" best restaurant awards in the October issue.

They have the New York Steakhouse on top as the best Grill Restaurant, followed by Madison and Hamiltons.

No mention of Fireplace Grill.

Isn't it the Intercon that has the Brazillian style BBQ restaurant, Fogo Vivo, in the basement? Whichever hotel it's in, I tried this place a couple of months back and was VERY impressed with the Brazilian style of BBQ- known as Churasco.

Until I discovered the equivalent at A Garden Rest. on soi 51- which they put on every Fri. & Sat. for Bt500 per person [considerably better price than Fogo Vivo, by-the-by]. This place is a superbly understated but impecably presented fine dining experience. Continental cuisine for the discriminating palate- BKK at it's very best.

Not the sort of place to bring the BG hookup-du jour, bring instead your best FL varietal and enjoy the refinement of it all.

EDIT IN: every Fri. & Sat.

Yep, but actually Intercon does not operate Fogo Vivo, that is part of the same business empire as Giannis, Spacio, etc.

I will try the one in Soi 51 if I can ever be arsed to drive down there.... the food is nice enough but an expensive buffet only works for the big eater

Thanks for the heads up Skip!

Sounds good. Not too pricey considering what's on offer.

It can't be any worse than that crappy New York Steakhouse in the Marriott with its potato offerings straight out of a supermarket bag in the freezer and into the deep frier (unless you prefer a microwaved "baked potato") and meat with a chemical aftertaste.
