Haven't seen this topics yet...

Do you guys eat from the food carts on the street (or at the floating markets)? ÝGenerally I've seen them serve some type of meat, veggies, & noodles... ÝAlso at some of the tables there are an assorted collection of condiments (sauces, veggies, etc) provided... Ý

They look intriging... Ý

How 'safe' are they (aka sanitary)? ÝCouldn't figure out if the food items (aka meat) was refrigerated or not...

What is in the 'meat' exactly? Ý

How do you order something? ÝWhat is the ettiquette? ÝWhat's the cost?

I'd like to know something before I risk a few days praying to the porcelain god...

Cheers,

Saddic

In the many years I've been here....I've eaten from carts up and down the country.

Never been sick yet.......Thais generally put a lot of importance onto personal hygiene......

However....I'm sure people do get sick and brothers from all over will have their stories to tell.....but I'd like to think most of them would be on the positive.

I do have a cast iron stomach though.....LOL

Order by asking or pointing.......cost...usually very cheap.......Noodle soup with red pork is my favourite from a cart......and I'll do it in Thai for you....though I'm buggered how to phonetically spell the first part....and other opinions would be fun.....Kwitdiew naam muu daeng.....the first bit phonetically looks crap....but it's the best I can do ......without confusing......MrJoe....how would you write this?

food on carts taste awesome and 10 times hotter(some) than what is served in restaurants(but then I have not been to many) and they are cheap too!

As thumb of rule is don't consume all from one stall, do "stall-hopping"!... then you should be fine.

I find that most THai food altho "HOT HOT HOT!" they are balanced up by something else like onions, and stuff, so at the end of the day one does not easily get too heaty(is there a better word for this?) from eating these sorta food.

I think the proplem with phonetics though is it is okay if you follow it closely....for someone who never spoke thai would probably read root rats spelling as Koo-way Tiew.......whereas what I wrote would probably get someone who didn't speak Thai closer to the pronunciation, but for people who speak more Thai....Root Rats spelling wins out.

Happy to see no negative Food Cart experiences yet!

I began eating food cart meals by giving 50 baht to the waitress at my favorite bar beer when I was hungry.  I'd generally ask for something like "pork" and then hopefully enjoy the result.  If I didn't like it I'd send her back for seconds.  Only downside of this method is sometimes you don't learn the names of the dishes.  The one thing I've never developed a taste for is the soups with fishballs or meatballs.  Just something about the texture for me.  AFAIK I've never gotten sick from the street vendors.  I did get hugely ill once from a restaurant in Lima, Peru, so my theory is that I am now immune to the worst stuff.

here are some of the more prevalent carts:

khao moo dang/moo krob - bbq pork/crispy pork with rice. look for red cook pork and fried pork with layers in the display case. it's then topped with gravy. delish.
khao na ped - roast duck with rice. look for, well, ducks in the display case. awesome.
khao mun gai/gai tod - hainanese chicken/fried chicken with rice. look for pasty boiled chickens and golden fried patties in the case. both are great. the boiled hainanese chicken is served with like a spicy fermented soy sauce and the fried chicken is served with a sweet tangy red chicken sauce. both usually come with clear soup.
ba mee moo dang - the chinese egg noodle soup with bbq pork. identify by the red pork and yellow balls of noodles in the case. can be had dry (haeng) or with soup (nahm). Ý
guay tiaw moo/gai/nua - various noodles with various meats. you can tell by the various white noodles in the case. the fun (sen yai) is the broad one and usually eaten with soup, rice noodle (sen lek) is the middle size...kind of like squared spaghetti. the verimicelli (sen mee) is the really small one. can be had both dry (without soup and usually with black sauce) and with soup (like spicy? request tom yum version where they will spice it up for you)
khao kha moo - stewed pork leg with rice. look for a big round pot of stewed whole legs. i've noticed the fried pork leg lately too. both are great. the stewed leg is served with spicy sauce and the fried leg (german recipe) is served with sweet black sauce.
guay tiaw lard naa/pad see eiw - crispy egg noodle or fun with gravy or stir-fried with soy sauce. can be had with pork (moo), chicken(gai), or beef(nua). Ý Ý
satay - grilled pork/chicken satay. served with pickled cucumbers and usually toasts.

i am sure i am missing some obvious ones, but i am getting too hungry to think of any more! it's definitely should be experienced if you like food. these food carts are usually found together and open all night.
