Report from Bernama dated 12 September 2012 :-

Suvarnabhumi Airport congestion to ease soon
===================================

BANGKOK: A plan to relieve congestion at Thailand's main Suvarnabhumi International Airport by moving low-cost airlines to the Don Muang Airport should soon cut the number of air passengers at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport by 10,000 per day.

Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited or AOT Vice President Somchai Sawasdipol, who is also Suvarnabhumi Airport Director, confirmed on Tuesday that low-cost airlines are scheduled to move from the Suvarnabhumi International Airport to the Don Muang Airport on Oct 1, 2012, including Thai AirAsia which serves growing passengers, reports Thai News Agency.

Somchai said AOT will also operate shuttle buses between both airports as of Oct 1 to facilitate passengers who need to travel between both airports, with four shuttle buses running from 6am to 10pm every day and departing from both airports hourly through expressways.

Somchai said that the number of passengers at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport should drop by some 10,000 daily, from 130,000 daily now, as of early next month.

Meanwhile, AOT celebrates the 6th anniversary of the Suvarnabhumi International Airport by decorating passenger terminals with world-renowned Thai orchids.

Suvarnabhumi immigration chief says staff is overloaded
=========================================

As Suvarnabhumi airport prepares to mark its sixth anniversary on Friday, its immigration officials are struggling with a heavy workload.

Pol Maj Gen Natthorn Prosunthorn, commander of Immigration Police Division 2 at Suvarnabhumi airport, said his team is busy not just checking passenger visas, but also protecting national security. "Immigration police must capture suspects who have outstanding arrest warrants issued by police stations nationwide," he said.

Suspects are taken by immigration officers to the stations where the warrants for their arrest were issued, the commander said.

At the moment, immigration officers are taking 10 people or more a day to police stations, which puts pressure on those left at the airport who must pick up their share of the work.

Apart from security duty, Pol Maj Gen Natthorn said staff must also provide receptions for official guests of the government, with many occurring on a daily basis.

But the most critical task is to secure the border and stop blacklisted people from getting in.

'No free time': Even for a toilet break
"Not everyone with a visa can enter the country. They will be sent back if they pose a threat," the commander said. "Plain-clothes police officers are also deployed to search for suspects," he added. Last year, 15,752,195 inbound passengers and 14,807,532 outbound travellers passed through the Suvarnabhumi airport's immigration counters.

Pol Maj Gen Natthorn said there is a huge shortage of immigration officers to process travel documents and electronic machines have been brought in to help them do the work. Authorities have deployed a number of automatic channel machines to check Thai passports, the commander said.

The equipment has helped shorten queues at the immigration desk, he said.

"It is impossible to hire more officials to match the ever growing number of passengers. So, the best way is to use machines which will boost work efficiency," he added.

Pol Maj Gen Natthorn also proposed recruiting translators of Russian, Chinese, Korean and Japanese languages to assist immigration officers.

People with a bachelor's degree who are well-versed in foreign languages should also be hired as police officers on contract, he suggested. Candidates would undergo immigration training for four months before working.

Pol Capt Saroj Tirakijphanich, deputy inspector of Immigration Division 2, said checking passports is a challenging task requiring considerable experience.

Many passports have been forged using counterfeiting technology which is hard to detect.

Sometimes the passports are genuine but the people who carry them are not the real owners but lookalikes, he said.

Each official checks around 5,000-6,000 visas per month.

As an incentive, an immigration officer who can deliver a record number of visa checks will be awarded with an overseas package tour. The highest record so far is 27,000 visa checks per month.

27,000 visa checks per month..... that's about 1 every 1.5 minutes, working a 12 hour day with no break, with non-stop arrivals, with only 1 day holiday in that month.... hummmm

Even if the Immigration Officer wanted to work non-stop to win the prize, wouldn't fatigue actually cause more of a security risk ?

It's a good idea...

Means the f***ers who want the prize will stamp them after a glance ( passports) and say ""next""

Beats some nasty bitch, that imagines your off f***ing her niece in some disco perhaps, and wants to slow you down and the whole line of hated western trash she sees in front of you.

I have many a time arrived at 11 pm just to wait 45 minutes.

This idea will see the lines move way faster.

So what if a few triple murderers from the middle east who resemble the photos slip into town ?

How can anyone in their right mind that sees immigration counters closed think it is foolish to hire more officers? If a counter is closed, and it is busy, then there are not enough officers working. If all the counters are open then no more officers are needed until more counters are built, but if all counters are not open then there is a shortage of officers.

On another note, the shuttle bus that will run between the two airports will have severe baggage restrictions. If you have the maximum number of bags allowed by the airline you flew into the country with then you won't be able to use the shuttle bus because they are not being set up to carry extra baggage. They are simply shuttle buses with no baggage compartment.

It is pretty pittiful that after only six years the airport is already obsolete. Not very good planning for such an expensive facility, and the next step is adding the third runway to bring in even more people....yeah right. Thaksin sure knew what he was doing when he approved that cash cow.

Report from The Nation dated 26 September 2012 :-

All systems go for Don Mueang's take-off
==============================

Airports of Thailand (AOT), together with King Power and The Mall Group, yesterday announced full readiness in terms of both duty-free and other commercial outlets at Don Mueang Airport, which will resume normal operations this coming Monday.

Don Mueang Airport chief Aniroot Thanomkulaboot said the airport was operation-ready in the following areas: duty-free shops, operated by King Power Group; other commercial outlets, which are handled by The Mall Group; public transportation; and a command and coordination centre.

"Both the duty-free and commercial shops at the airport are finalising decoration. We will have more than 2,200 taxis parked for providing a transportation service in front of Cargo Terminal 2, and about 30 of them will be allowed to pick up passengers at the first floor of the Arrival Terminal at a time.

We will also have buses and shuttle buses to provide service between Don Mueang Airport and Suvarnabhumi Airport, as well as limousines to provide transportation service to travellers," he said.

Aniroot said AOT had set up a command and coordination centre at a temporary location at Don Mueang Airport from September 28 and October 15 to follow up on the various works and solve any service problems that might arise over the reopening period.

AOT will also join with the Royal Thai Air Force in the full exercise of an airport flood-prevention plan on Friday, he added.

Sombat Dechapanichkul, vice chairman of King Power Group, said the group would manage seven duty-free shops for the airport.

Four outlets are located in the departure area and two in the arrival area. A delivery and pick-up counter has been set up in the city.

The group, which has invested Bt200 million in the various outlets, forecasts overall revenue of Bt4.5 billion-Bt5 billion in the first year of operation.

Don Mueang stores will account for Bt3 billion, with the remainder coming from the delivery and pick-up shop, he said.

"The prices of our goods at Suvarnbhumi Airport, Don Mueang Airport and the delivery and pick-up shop will be the same," he added.

The group has to pay AOT Bt60 million per month for the duty-free concession at the reopened airport.

Natthapong Kitnitcheeva, chief operating officer of The Mall Group, said it had been granted a concession to operate retail shops at the airport with a total space of 2,700 square metres for the sale of more than 50 leading brands.

The group has invested Bt200 million in establishing these outlets.

"It is the first time the group has operate shops at Don Mueang Airport, where we have employed 300 people to renovate and decorate outlets in the same design as our department stores," said Natthapong.

Report from AP dated 25 September 2012 :-

Bangkok airport seeks to solve bird-strike threat
====================================

BANGKOK (AP) - Authorities at Bangkok's international airport say it is home to more than 80 species of birds that pose safety risks to aircraft using the facility.

Suvarabhumi Airport was built on 32 sq km of swampy land east of Bangkok and is surrounded by vast areas of farmland and rice paddy fields.

Airport director Somchai Sawasdeepon said on Tuesday that several birds have collided with planes since the airport opened in 2006.

He said there were "no serious" incidents but bird strikes pose "major threats" to safety at the airport, one of Asia's busiest.

Alternatively, it could be 14 hours a day, and 6 days a week. That should do the job. At least the person gets one day off.
