Samsung launches bigger Galaxy Tab
=======================

South Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung presented Sunday a new version of its tablet computer with a larger screen of 10.1 inches, four months after launching its first Galaxy Tab.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1, which uses the latest version of Google's Android operating system, weighs 599 grams (1 pound, five ounces) and is just 10.9 millimetres (0.43 inches) thick.

Samsung's first tablet, the Galaxy Tab with a seven-inch screen, was launched in October.

The South Korean company also unveiled its latest smartphone on the eve of the opening of the mobile phone industry's annual conference in Barcelona.

It presented the Galaxy S II as "the world's slimmest smartphone" at just 8.49 millimetres thick.

The head of Samsung's mobile division, JK Shin, said they focused on "screen, speed and content" while developing the phone.

The Galaxy S II is equipped with voice recognition that allows users to dictate text messages instead of tapping on the screen.

It also includes NFC or Near Field Communication technology which allows for make secured transactions by swiping their phone near a receptor, such payments for riding on public transport.

Samsung upsizes iPad rival
================

Samsung has upsized its Galaxy Tab, unveiling a 10.1-inch (25.7-cm) version aimed at muscling its way deeper into the territory of Apple's iPad.

Samsung Electronics, the South Korean giant, showed off a bigger version of its original seven-inch (17.8-cm) display at the mobile industry's annual congress in Barcelona.

The new screen, unveiled on Sunday four months after the launch of the first Galaxy Tab, just eclipses iPad's 9.7-inch display.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is powered by Honeycomb, the new version of Google's Android operating system designed specifically for tablet computers.

Google's free, open-source Honeycomb is expected to quickly be built into an array of touchscreen tablets in a booming market currently dominated by the iPad launched by Apple last year.

In a sign that Google is intent on wooing the developers behind the "apps" fueling the popularity of smartphones and tablets, executives here stressed that Honeycomb is built as a platform for software innovation.

Google also announced the launch of an Android Market webstore at market.android.com, where people can get work or play applications for devices running on the mobile operating software.

The new Samsung tablet weighs 599 grams (1 pound, five ounces) and is just 10.9 millimetres (0.43 inches) thick.

Patrick Chomet, Vodafone group director of terminals, said his customers in more than 20 markets worldwide would get the first chance to buy the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the next few months.

The tablet has dual surround-sound speakers, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera.

It includes a 1GHz dual core application processor.

Apple reportedly already has a new version of the iPad in production, however.

According to a Wall Street Journal report last week, Apple is producing a thinner, more powerful version of the iPad tablet.

The second-generation iPad will have more memory and a front-facing camera for capabilities such as a Face Time video-conferencing feature on Apple iPhone 4 smartphones, according to the Journal.

Apple said in its latest earnings release that it sold nearly 15 million iPads in the eight months after they were introduced in April last year.

Samsung also unveiled what it touted as the world's slimmest smartphone -- the 8.49-millimetre thick Galaxy S II.

The new phone, based on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, is equipped with voice recognition that allows users to dictate text messages instead of tapping on the screen.

It also includes NFC or Near Field Communication technology which allows users to make secure transactions by swiping their phone near a reader, such as in payments for riding on public transport.

"In 2011, we will take Samsung's leadership in speed, screen and content to a whole new level, "Samsung's mobile communications business chief, JK Shin, said.

AMD looks to tablets
=============

AMD, the US-based processor maker, is expanding into the media tablet and netbook market.

The company is also preparing to launch an entry-price notebook product for the first time, starting from US$200.

Bob Grim, director for client product marketing of AMD, said the company would introduce a new-generation processor, called AMD Fusion Family. The product combines processing capability with graphics in the same chip, called Accelerated Processing Units (APU). It is designed for media tablets, netbooks, notebooks and desktop computers.

The processor will also offer a sleeker design, longer battery life for up to 10 hours and higher definition for desktop and mobile devices all at a lower price than its rivals, he said.

Previously, AMD made processors mainly for notebooks, priced at about $300, and desktop computers. "We are now moving into the tablet and netbook market for the first time, with prices raging from $220-500 a unit."About 35 brands use its processors, including Acer, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba.

Chukkrit Watcharasaksilp, country manager of AMD Thailand, said Thailand's internet penetration was around 26%, though PC penetration is only 14%.

4G won't be *real* until at least 2012 - there simply won't be any penetration from any of the carriers, IMO.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 2 March 2011 :-

Apple to unveil iPad upgrade
==================

Apple was expected to unveil a second-generation iPad on Wednesday as rivals struggle to compete with the original model that has ruled the market since its release last year.
The Internet was abuzz with industry insiders and Apple lovers expressing desires and speculation regarding what the maker of iPhones, iPods, iPads, and Macintosh computers has in store at an invitation-only event in San Francisco.

Cryptic invitations provided the date, time and location of the event and displayed an image of a March 2 calendar page peeling back to reveal a corner of an iPad.

The message on the page reads "Come see what 2011 will be the year of."

Technology analysts have taken to referring to 2011 as the "year of the tablet."

All bets are on Apple taking the wraps off an improved version of the iPad that chief executive Steve Jobs introduced at the same downtown San Francisco venue in January of last year.

Jobs, however, is not expected to play his usual role as host at Wednesday's event. While he has reportedly remained involved in overall strategy and product development, the Apple chief, who turned 56 last week, is on an indefinite medical leave of absence.

Goldman Sachs analysts, in a note to investors, said they expect Apple to "announce the second-generation of its game-changing iPad.

"We expect the device to provide an early line of defense against the wave of tablet competitors arriving in coming months," they said.

The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this year was rife with gadget manufacturers showing off tablets they were racing to get into a market set ablaze by the iPad.

Motorola Mobility chairman and chief executive Sanjay Jha said Monday the US telecom maker is pleased with early sales of the Xoom, its iPad rival.

"They're off to a good start," Jha said of sales of the Xoom, which costs between $600 and $800.

The Xoom is the first tablet powered by "Honeycomb" software crafted specifically for such devices by Internet powerhouse Google and has been heralded as a viable challenger for iPad.

Another upcoming rival, the large-screen version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, is also powered by Honeycomb.

Apple sold 14.8 million iPads through the end of 2010, according to the company's earnings statements.

The second-generation iPad is expected to be slimmer with increased memory, a more powerful computer chip, and front and rear-facing cameras giving it the "FaceTime" video-conferencing ability featured on iPhone 4 smartphones.

"In today's consumer marketplace, you can't go very long without an upgrade," said Gartner Research analyst Ken Dulaney. "And the other tablets have at least caught up to last year's model."

Dulaney expected much of the event to be focused on improved software, with only minor changes to iPad hardware.

"The product was so good out of the shoot that I don't think there is a radical change forthcoming," Dulaney said. "You make your money off hardware, but the power and control comes from software."

Van Baker, also a Gartner analyst, was certain Wednesday's news will be an iPad boasting iterative improvements but no startling changes and no change in price.

"The 'wow' has already been done -- for all intents and purposes Apple owns the tablet market right now," Baker said.

"Everybody is talking about the Xoom, but who the heck wants to pay 800 bucks when you can get a perfectly good iPad for 500 bucks?" he asked.

The $600 Xoom is only available with monthly data plans that easily add hundreds of dollars a year to the cost of using the tablets.

The six iPad models range in price from $500 to $830 with the three higher-priced models having 3G mobile telecom connection capabilities.

Lower-priced iPads are designed to take advantage of connections at wireless Internet hotspots.

Report from The Nation dated Sunday 3 April 2011 :-

Android tablets will soon overtake the iPad, experts predict
============================================

Berlin - Apple is getting some competition. Big-name manufacturers like Hewlett Packard, LG and Samsung all want to take on the iPad, which currently rules the roost for tablet computers, and they're relying on the Android operating system to help them do so.

Apple might lose its lead status as early as 2012, say some experts. But it's all good news for consumers, who might get to enjoy sinking prices.

"By the end of 2012, Android tablets will rapidly overtake the iPad in market share," forecasts expert Sascha Pallenberg during the Droid condevelopers' conference in Berlin.

Currently, Apple sells nine of every 10 tablet computers purchased, according to market experts. But the "sheer mass" of Android-based tablet computers will guarantee their success says Pallenberg, who blogs about technology from his base in Taiwan.

Ten larger manufacturers, as well as countless smaller ones, currently sell devices of different sizes and categories. In the coming months, companies like RIM, LG, Asus, Acer and Hewlett Packard will all bring iPad competitors to market.

Many of them run with new Android software dubbed Honeycomb, designede specially for tablet computers. Android is open source software developed under the watchful eye of Google.//DPA

The guy who wrote this is clueless.... The big names are still not ready to take on the Ipad... and now they have to compete with the iPad2. No doubt Apple will still be the leader in Tablets.

I for one will not buy the iPad2, I will wait for iPad3 (hoping they finally bring the Retina Display to iPad).
