have one more question, will a french GSM number be roaming in Shangai and are all internet connections quite good,no hotmail banned or crazy stuff like? Easy and affordale access to international phone calls and fax??

Unless its for business avoid China, even Shanghai and Beijing.
It is exactly NewKid described : expensive and no value for money.
10.000 baht for a covered BJ and 1.5 pop? That’s a bit over the top, isn’t? Unless she is a supermodel call-girl that shags your brains out with every trick in the book. (They exist in Shanghai, but they go at $1000 a night. )
We both enjoy the same kind of “fun” and you will not find it in Shanghai. Not even in the most expensive karaoke joints/clubs. See my post about Piano/Caribbean and their Chinese attitude towards sanook.
Their idea of a good night out is a karaoke room with a 40inch LCD screen, a platter of fresh fruit and 6 bottles of Chivas. The more they drink the louder they get – and they are already loud sober. Trust me on this, I spent many of night bored and frustrated surrounded by drunk colleagues and giggly, nil-English speaking PR-girls.

Agreed. I have been stuck in Southern China for 3 months now. Occasional trips to Beijing and Hangzhou. I am bored shitless. It is expensive and no fun in the KTV lounges and there is nowhere else to go. OK Beijing has a nightlife but Bangkok it isnt.

I've been to Shanghai earlier this year, and will be there again next month. I remember hustlers coming to me in the big pedestrian street offering girls, but I rejected them as it didn't feel safe. Could have been Nanjing Rd. or the like? Any update on the scene?

The hustlers on Nanjing rd. only want to drag you to some place, drink some and set you up with a padded, scam bill.
Nicer SH options I haven't found in other Chinese cities: Tongren Lu has some nice bars with 8-ball pooltables, where buy-me-drink-girls offer all kinds of relief, in or out of the bar. Julu Lu has a strip of bars with buy-me-drink-and-grope-me-if-you-like-but-dont-ask-me-to-come-to-the-hotel-as-im-working-untill-4am-girls. Some of them too cute/hot to not at least try...
