I go to China failry regularly and the vast change in recent years is that hotel lobbies are stuffed with P4P girls quite capable of beating on your door at 2 a.m. From Tibet to Turpan via Kunming same story, especially if there is a "beauty salon" attached to the hotel.

For those of you making the trip to Beijing.nightlife in Beijing is rather dull, certaily compared too BKK.
Anyway, if you need some action just head to the sanlitun area.there's 2 strips of bars here.The one on the north side is easy to spot with all the neonlights from the pubs and disco's.most of these pubs have bands playing every night and the occasional freelancer.price is negotiable.
Before entering these places you will be approached by dozens of touts who will offer you P4P.
If you say yes they will take you to a nearby MP.
In front off the big hotels you will find these touts also.

Interesting story, and quite possible (especially in China), but how did the guy or the police happen to know if your friend was the father until the child was born and then confirmed with a blood test?
Did he actually see the girls pregnancy test?
Why would the guy not go to his consulate or embassy to deal with the issue? Just saying that scares the hell out of the PSB dudes.
Did the girl go to the police or him first? Because if the girl went to him first she would know that if she contacted the police she would not get a fair share. No one trusts the police here.
And finally, abortions are cheap, no question affairs in China. He pays, gives her some crying money and thats it.
Could have happened of course but....I would suspect your friend must have been a super mark. In those days shoulda cost him $1G max.

Sorry, dont know if this thread was intended for Beijing only but things in south china are changing for the worst. Already alot of robberies and muggings and even a few murders -suspected as most victims have not been found yet.
The areas are near the HK border (Shenzhen) so be very careful as China is not the safest country since the fall of communism.

Well in fact phantomtony is theoretically correct.
The poitical semantics now used is a 'socialist marxist state with Chinese characteristics'. And since the allowance of privately owned business and entry into the party for select capitalists, the reds now have 'greenbacks'.
Suggest you can use the following...'Socialist Totalitarian Capitalism' as a truer statement of conditions now present.
And yes the heavy industrialized south has discovered that Chinese crooks have found out where the money is and they have come to get it.
There are real reports of guys on motorcycles, with a buddy riding machete, hacking of arms to liberate too tightly held purses, bags and briefcases.

Wow, really, quite the makings of a global super power, there -- though, in all fairness, they do seem to have the right idea in dealing with these kind of criminals, when they are apprehended.

Weird, I feel pretty safe in Bangkok - certainly safer than in Los Angeles late at night. Might just be errornous impression, of course.
