Really not much within walking distance to your hotel – with the possible exception of The Diplomat bar, and Bar 87+ both at the Conrad Hotel down the road a bit from Athenee. But as jingjo points out the BTS (Skytrain) is a fairly short walk from your hotel. I would suggest picking up a map at the airport that should help you to get to most of the places via skytrain with relative ease. About the only time you will need to use a taxi is if you are heading to one of the after-hours places.
Someone earlier posted directions to Glow; Twisted Republic is on Sukhumvit soi 11. I noticed on a recent trip to Aussyland that Twisted Republic advertised in the Thai Air onboard magazine.
Also of note there has been a few mentions of Eden Club; while I would agree that no Thailand experience should be considered complete without an Eden experience, I was a little leery of suggesting this to the OP because of his comment about not being to sure about a full on experience. But if after getting your feet wet if you feel like taking it to the next level then it is hard to beat Tulips for a full on oily experience, or Eden for a full on three-way experience.

For clubbing/party info check http://www.bangkokrecorder.com.
Club 808 (RCA) - http://www.808bangkok.com and also on http://www.facebook.com - often has great guest DJs. (No trance though.)
Club Culture (near Phayathai [sp?] BTS) sometimes has good DJs.
GLOW, as mentioned earlier, can be awful or very good. Not sure they have that many trance parties.
On Soi Cowboy I highly recommend Baccara. Good atmosphere, plenty of eye candy, and the DJ spins some pretty good electronic music.
My favourite oily is Kornwan.

Avoid Bangkok. Too many things happen to first timers. Elephants will want you to feed them for BT 20, guys have hand written CVs in front of McDs looking for work, and some of the most stunningly beautiful women have johnsons as big as John Holmes (so I am told).
The amount of gorgeous 'real' women will cripple you and for no good reason you will "save" one of them from a life of working in a bar by sending them money every month after you leave.
Please listen, don't come here. But if you do, forget techno music. You can get that anywhere. Jump on two or three beauties at a time (wearing your raincoat of course) and have the ride of your life for a week.
Then use your IPod to listen to techno tunes on the way home!!
