@Mr Alan
Thank you very much for the comments.

I think the best would be then to ask for a quote in different shops for brand-lenses (Hoya, Seiko, Zeiss or Silor) with a specific Refractive Index and compare. I will do that for a RI of 1.67 as it should be thin enough for me (-4.25, -6). They seem to be in the web at US$130 with Anti-reflect coating.

It looks like lenses with Refractive Index of 1.71 are more than 260US$ each, which is too high for me.

However, I don't expect the cost difference with the Europe or the US for brand lenses to be too high. I will report in 2 weeks as I'm leaving for BKK next Thursday.

Mr Alan
Latrell, Most manufacturers have either a 1.66 or 1.67 lens material, which should be more than thin enough for your Rx. The Seiko and Hoya lenses are usually considered to be very good quality.

But you could even consider a 1.6 index lens, especially if your frames are not too large. Seiko makes a nice 1.6 index aspheric lens that would almost be as thin as the 1.67, but with better off-axis optics. Finalite is also a excellent 1.6 material that is available from Sola/AO (not sure if widely available in LOS).

Avoid polycarbonate lenses (1.59 index) unless you specifically need "safety" glasses for use in sports activities or in an industrial environment. These lenses have a high tensile strength and high impact resistance, but their optics are worse than all 1.67 lenses. If you have rimless frames, some opticians may recommend polycarb since it is easier to drill the needed holes without cracking the lens, but I would not listen to that advise if you care about the quality of your vision.

Be careful about anti-reflective coatings. Not all coatings are the same quality (especially in terms of durability). The factory coatings applied to finished lenses by the manufacturer are usually the best.

When I went to Pattaya the first time a bit over a year ago I had the idea in my mind to go look for glasses from there.

I was in Pattaya and made my way into Charoen Optical. They are spread all over in there, I used the one close to intersection of 2nd Rd./Pattaya Tai (a little bit to the direction of Pattaya, was it Thappraya Rd...).

Went to look for glasses but finally decided on contact lens. Had wanted to try them before and though ok why not now.

Was at the time wearing my glasses but didn't remember the exact values of strengt. No problem. The doctor checked it from the glasses and also to make sure (because time had passed since I changed my lenses) I asked him to check the values from my eyes also. Again no prob.

The cute young Christina Ricci look alike was very helpful in telling about the different options of the linses and also showing and assisting me in front of mirror on how to treat the linses (clean, store) and put them on and off.

I got -3.0 linses and chose monthly desposable soft lenses, for the price of 169 baht per pair only.
That's about 3,4 euros. Here the price from optican for the same kind of prices would be 20-25 euros plus 25€ more for eye check. No thanks.

Now everytime I've been to Thailand I've visited the same store (it's nice how everybody remembers you and the type of your lenses) and bought a few pairs to take with me with eye drops and cleaning liquid.

I always thought that reading Thai would be harder 'cause there was little if any punctuation. Thanks for pointin' out that it is quite easy to read English that has no punctuation, Thai must be similarly just as easy to read for Thais.

Cheers
PS. No TF intended guys!

As promised earlier, here is my report on shopping for glasses in BKK.

I visited half a dozen shops and I finally bought 2 pairs of glasses (1 regular and 1 suglasses) in a small shop near the Ratchatewi BTS station and I am very satisfied with the deal I got.
I bought a Seiko T346 titanium frame with Hoya Hi-Index 1.6 glass lenses for |6000THB + 1 pair of sunglasses with tinted Hoya plastic Hi-index lenses for |3000 THB.
This shop did not have the largest choice of frames but they quoted the best prices and had the Seiko frames I was looking for.
They gave me a free eye-check but at the shop next to them (they seem to be connected).
The name of the shop is "See Heng Huat Optical" but the signs are all in Thai on the front. They have a blue Hoya sign outside and their Logo is a tri-dimensional H.

Among the other shops I visited, "Paris Miki" in the Siam Center had an excellent choice of titanium frames and they got Seiko lenses up to 1.67, which I found very rarely, but prices were higher.
Same remark for the optical shop in the Emporium shopping enter.

In the Sukhumvit area, avoid the shop at the corner of Soi5: the lady tried to sell me overpriced frames with plastic lenses at around 6kTHB and was pushing for getting my OK straight away!
The one on Sukhumvit near Soi 11 gave good advice but prices still higher.

In summary, the shop on new Petchaburi Road near the Ratchatewi BTS station seem to have the best deals but you have to know what you want and get them to write down in details the specs when you pass the order. I had the good idea to check the packaging of the lenses they had in stock and wanted to fit the same day and I noticed they were 1.55, whereas I asked for 1.6.
They had to order the 1.6 lenses with 3 days lead time.
In general, those guys seem to be a bit messy, so watch them closely.

Anyway, thanks to all the members for their good tips and advice.

One month afterwards, I have to add to my report that one of my glass has already a chip on the edge next to the upper rim and I don't know how it happened. After a visit to my UK optician, he made the remark that they never fit glass-lenses to my kind of frames (half-rimless, no rim at the bottom).
Therefore, I recommend plastic/polycarbonate lenses, contrary to a post sooner in this thread, irrespective of your proffesional activities.
This error is going to cost me a lot as I will have to change both lenses to plastic at the high UK high-street prices. My optician quoted 140 GBP for both ! I 'll look how I can lower that cost, maybe over the internet.
Unfortunately, my BKK-optician has no email, so I cannot enquire about the costs of doing this remotely per mail. I should maybe have taken a bigger shop.
