I guess if someone has been burned as much as you seem to have been, then cynacism is understandable, and reason to cross Thailand off your list of living, or vacation destinations. Which country are you trying next?
... nice shot, Koolbreeze, but that is a simplistic Cornelian Choice I don't buy.

... I am a foster father to 4 abandoned Thai children, all with their not so unique Thai stories of abuse... and yeah, if I could get them out of here, I would... their futures, as mine, would be far brighter in many other countries... unlike the f***ing animals who passed as parents for these children, I will not abandon them to the wretchedness of a life as institutionalized, or street orphans in this wasteland of soulless liars, cheats and theives.

... maybe you've seen a few of them... wonder if you know some of their stories.

... so, I choose to make the best of it for them... here, amongst the rotted, fetid debris that passes as Thai cultural values.

... and as you say, this is a long way from the Airport Link... not sure where we got side-tracked... but, I see it as all related... what the Thai people produce, from orphaned, abused children to ineptly conceived public infrastructure, is a product of their system of cultural values... so, there it is.

Magnum,
My comments were based entirely on my experience of the BTS and the Airport link. And I feel that the Singapore based writer of that report got his facts wrong, if he weren't plain lying. Because you cannot get to the top of the escalator at the airport station without a ticket. And to complain about signage ! There are actually several good signages there that lead you to the correct escalator, to the correct platform, and so on.

For a man coming from Singapore (a land of many signages where people rarely need to talk to each other !) that writer could not have been so blind to the numerous signages in the station. Maybe he saw one more spot where, under Singapore law or custom one more signage ought to have been, and therefore, like Don Quixote, charged at the "inept" Thais. That's what my molehill was about, and it did not refer to any poor planning or corruption that may have gone into the making of this railway line.

Lack of planning maybe, as you say. But more evident is the great ease and economy that this railway line has brought to commuters. From the airport you reach Indra Square in 30 minutes paying like what ? 30 baht, if I remember right. Nana? Take the BTS from Phaya Thai, another 25 baht ticket. If you are travelling light, it would be incredible if you did not see the economy and ease and speed of this network.

Apologist for the crap produced in this country ? Sure, there is crap here, like there is everywhere else. But, rather than being an apologist, I accept it with a shrug. I sometimes encounter discrimination at some of the night venues, because of my skin colour, but it doesn't make me dislike them.

As a farang expat living there your experience is different. It astonishes me that you say the Airport Express link is an effort to "dump a load of stanky horse shit like this out there and call it a modern transportation success story." That's extreme.

Koolbreez,I agree with you that the BtS line to the Airport is the quickest and cheapest way to get there so long as you are not encumbered with a lot of luggage, and your plane is departing during the hours the train is running.

I use the City Line from Makasan for 30 baht.It takes about 30 minutes.

Report from The Nation dated 11 August 2011 :-

New BTS On Nut extension opens Friday 12 August 2011
====================================

An extension to the BTS train service from On Nut station to Soi Bearing in Samut Prakan will open as scheduled Friday 12 August 2011, Her Majesty the Queen's birthday.

The new stations, from On Nut to Soi Bearing, are - Bang Chak, Punna Withee, Udomsuk, Bang Na, and terminal station Soi Bearing, between Soi Sukhumvit 105 and 107.

The new extension is great for people traveling from Pattaya to Ekamai. You can disembark at the BTS station (Bang Na) if you're not willing to wait in traffic for the bus to arrive at Ekemai.

Has the BTS or subway been affected by the floods? Are all areas reachable by the BTS or subway (i.e. rachadapisek, etc.) as usual?

If you ask me, I would like to keep away from underground transport systems when there is a deluge threatening to smash into the city.

Is there some type of day pass or Octopus type card we can use for the Skytrain and subway?
