More on the language topic thats kicked off, without physically going out of my way to study Thai I would find it nearly impossible to learn perfect Thai, despite being here for 9years. I work for an international company where all company work is conducted in English, the Thai staff we have speak English throughout the day, my company does not do business with many Thais and the ones we do my basic Thai gets us through. I drive myself to and from work back to my house. I spend evenings at home with my children and wife, speaking English.
I find when I do speak Thai to a shop assistant, or anyone else one comes into contact outside of P4P that invariably little is understood and English is the language of repsonse.
Generally my Thai is 'basic-okay' I can converse with a taxi on the way home from a pub, I can chat with ladies of the night. I could in no way hold my own against a 'normal' Thai for very long, but then it would be a rare occasion when I needed to. I personally think OAH is using sarcasm in his post, but in some ways I agree that there is very little need to over learn the language, I have managed very well, without the price stitch ups since i've been here.
Would I like to learn, yes, but I would like to keep my job more and that requires lots of time and effort, so when I finish work i'm not going off to study.
JMHO.

This language discussion got started by the report from a member about the difficulties of making his instructions in English being understood by a Thai receptionist.
If he had mastered some basic Thai he might have been better understood.
That was all I wanted to say..

Indeed, come to think of it, it may very well show exactly that, although I have no doubt that you and I have very different ideas of whether that is a good thing. Well, bro Blubber, I do speak some Thai, not perfect but good enought to get people to understand me in real life...
Now if a receptionist make you repeat 20 time the name and location of your hotel and still cant understand it, speaking fluent Thai wont help you much will it?

If you are a native English speaker, even masttering fluent Thai might still not be enough, yes I agree. The reason is many English speakers' way of not articulating clearly enough, talking instead with sort of a "closed mouth". Thais generally seem to find it easier to understand Scandinavians speaking Thai because of the Scandinavian clear way of articulations is so much easier to Thai ears. Also the use of for example rising tones comes more natural to Scandinavians than to native english speakers.
This is indeed way off topic but it started with the story about that receptionist and I just commented upon it...

OAH, it must have been tough living in a garbage dump for 17 years, I don’t know how you’ve been able to stand it. I can now see why you would feel that Thai is an inconsequential language and that you have never discovered any reason to learn any. You probably haven’t ventured out of your room since you arrived, let alone out of BKK. I am sorry to hear this.
If you ever did, you might just discovery a surprisingly interesting world of pleasures and new adventures out there, where getting what you want over the phone with the Tulips receptionist and chatting with cab drivers is merely the tip of the iceberg in terms of experiences that can be enhanced and enlivened by knowing some of the language, in Thailand or anywhere. Language is intimately related to culture and tradition, but as you live in a garbage dump you probably have noticed neither.
Okay, back to talking about bare backing at Tulips. (Madfrog, stop picking on the poor receptionist!  )
