I've just taken a job at Chulalongkorn University to start Feb 1. They are providing me an apartment on campus (I pay rent, but cheap for that area).

I want to bring stuff in excess of what I can cram into my luggage, more clothes, texts books, and small stuff for my apt that i've collected over the years.

I'd like some advice on how to best move this stuff (from the east coast of usa), in terms of least expensive-while still in a timely fashion, and also on what to do to minimize possible customs issues/charges. If I address it to one of my Thai colleagues, would that make any difference?

thanks

If you have a work permit, there is a time window during which you can import personal belongings duty-free. You will have to do some more specific research as to the time frame, procedures, etc. There are companies that specialize in moving stuff to Thailand. In California, there is a place called Rama (google it) that ships partial container loads (they wait until they have enough to fill a whole container). They may be able to advise you.

If you don't do it during the specified time window, you will pay duty at Thai Customs, who are notoriously arbitrary and greedy. Usually, you need to arrange for a local Thai freight forwarder to expedite the deal; however, lately I have heard of them causing delays in order to get you to pay increased tea money, which they then pocket, and pay the Customs minimum. Maybe someone here can make a specific recommendation for an honest customs broker...

Sorry I can't offer more specifics; there are many threads on other sites that spell the whole thing out.

Now is NOT too soon to get started. Also, check with Chula. They probably have helped get this done many times before.

Congratulations on the job, and best of luck in Thailand.

Buy some foot lockers and take em with you on the plane...watch the weight though?... books pack on the load !.... teaching reference books, take your best ones and leave others behind for another day.... this is Thailand just wing it.... clothes can always be tailor made in Bangkok...bring the favorites and get copies made.... just start Spring cleaning out your stuff.... take only your best... and goodwill or store the rest...

or better yet 5'x5'x5' palatize your stuff.... stack up what you need with those measurement constraints and weight cost.... a bulk rate shipper should provide wood palate and they'll plastic wrap it snug....they'll have to truck it across the states to LAX or SFO then slow boat it across

business owners and students move by airlines... many haul way excessive boxes and footlockers though their trips across the pond

thanks for your replies.

an extra couple of bags on the plane sounds like the way to go as I dont have that much to bring in excess to justify a 5x5x5.

I'll call EVA to find out the details, I have a Deluxe ticket, so maybe I have extra Kgs to play with.
