Has any of the bros gotten a Thai Driver's License? Do I have to take a test or just pay off someone? I currently have an International Drivers License and one from the USA, but my International Driver's license is due to expire in August and I am not returning to the USA for a while.

Stickman had a long, detailed article about the process about two months ago at  www.stickmanbangkok.com

He archives his weekly postings so you'd probably have to do a little clicking around to find it.

Been here 3 years and never had one. I have had many accidents and been pulled over multiple times. I think that the 100 baht note substitutes for a drivers license here.

I wouldn't waste your time with getting one, it's a joke.

MrJoe
Way back when (many many years ago) I went for a license. The test was as follows:

MrJoe gets in car with policeman as passenger. Police officer gestures for MrJoe to drive into garage a short distance in front. MrJoe assumes this will bge a test of his ability to stop and reverse out of the enclosed space (okay he was somewhat new to LOS). MrJoe pulls into garage. Policeman says "500 Baht". MrJoe is baffled for a moment, then smiles and hands over the money.

Policeman hands over license and gets out of car.

I have had one for several years and find it to be useful at times.  Here are probably more details than you want:

How to Apply for a Drivers License

Types of driving licences
1. A temporary driving licence for a car or motorcycle (valid for first year following initial application).
2. A one-year driving licence for a car or motorcycle (issued on application after holding a temporary licence).
3. An international driving licence for a car or motorcycle (valid for 1 year).
Qualifying requirements
1. Aged not less than 18 years.
2. In a case where an applicant is not a resident, the applicant must hold a Non-Immigrant Visa.
3. Applicants must not have any physical or mental handicap that will prevent them from driving safely.
Documentary evidence to be attached to the application for a driving licence
1. Non-residents: A copy of the passport of a non-resident, showing that a valid Non-Immigrant Visa is held; residents: a copy of the Alien Book and Residence Book. (At the time of submitting the application, the original passport or Alien Book and Residence Book will have to be shown to the receiving officer.)
2. A certified letter of address from the Embassy/Consulate of the applicant, or from a government agency of Thailand such as the Immigration Bureau, or a house registration form.
3. A medical certificate that certifies that the applicant is not insane or suffering from mental problems or diseases that would to be a danger when driving. There is a specific certificate for this available from most clinics
4. Two photographs, size 1x1 inch (taken within the six months prior to submitting the application).
Where to submit an application
1. There are five places in Bangkok where an application can be submitted

Not a joke when you want to claim on your insurance or someones elses and you do not have a valid thai license.
Also I understand that if you have a
non-resident visa you cannot drive on
an international license.

Good point re insurance O/H ... mind you think its usually farang pays in any case ! - and yes, not much faith in the International licence - allowing you can get them in Khosan road for around 200 baht ... - think I have about a dozen of those ones being held in various precincts around the country awaiting me to call, pay a fine, and pick up -
Although the bribe always works, I dont like paying treble the thai rate ... anyway, the boys in Brown must have plenty, allowing for the claim today by an MP owner that he contributes 12 MILLION a month to them !!

Kryptonite
I have made 3 claims to my insurance on the accidents that I have had. Remember this is Thailand, money is the #1 Law. They just write it down as my wife driving (she doesn't have a drivers license) or my father-in-law driving.

Yes in Chonburi, if you want to wait 4-6 hours you can have them tell you the answers to the test and pay 500bht and get a drivers license. Not worth my time.

No where in Thailand is anything enforced, why would any of you epect having a drivers license would help or hurt you?
