Whisper.... that seems expensive. My SO just took a course at AUA for 30 hours for only 2100B. What justifies your price ?

Hello bkkfella,
The price I quoted is for a one-on-one course with a native English speaker. It works out cheaper if there are more students in the class.
By the way, what's an SO?
cheers,
Whisper

Oh, I see. One on one... that explains the higher cost.

SO = significant other... which could be GF or living companion or fiancee or wife.

Hello all:

I have replied to this forum in awhile but Im thinking about coming back to LOS for a few reasons. I was thinking about teaching English while I finish my own personal studies.

Let me give you a little bit more context:
First Im married to a Thai woman all ready and we live in California. Before I took her away from LOS... she was in advertising and making decent money for a thai resident (I think around or up to 120k per month but average 90k per month) She also have a family business that she stated that her parents might ask me to help out with. Even though I am in LOS... Im attempting to get away from my current work and study something called CCIE. (If you know what Cisco is... then it is the highest certification for Cisco and this will allow me to work in the Asia-Pacific for good money.) My wife wants to come back home to Thailand and offers to take care of me while I study. This is where the dilemna comes in... what will her family think? Also hopefully I can ask these questions without getting slammed too hard.
1. In thai traditional families... wont it look extremely odd that the daughter is taking care of her husband?
2. If you start teaching... would I have enough time to put into my studies... I am trying to put at least 6 hours per day. Or a better question to that is... how much time does teaching take? 9 to 5 and a few hours for grading homework...
3. Is 30k to 40k salary standard for teaching English? I have a BS and a MBA. But, my focus is more technical and business. I taught classes before but for technical certifications and not English.
4. My wife's family lives in Bankhae (I think thats right)... will I have to work in BKK central or can I head over in that direction.
5. My last question but the most important... is it worth it for me to teach to feel not like a total leech on my wife or is there a possibility of actually working in the IT arena for a foriegn company but making above Thai salary IT wages?

Sorry for a long post but thx in advance

*** If you take a full-time job, I don't think you'll have the energy to study after work. You could work part time though, teaching corporate or private tutoring, 2-3 hours in the evenings.

3. Is 30k to 40k salary standard for teaching English? I have a BS and a MBA. But, my focus is more technical and business. I taught classes before but for technical certifications and not English.

*** 30-40k is standard for a full-time job. There are plenty jobs under 30k and a few between 50-60.

4. My wife's family lives in Bankhae (I think thats right)... will I have to work in BKK central or can I head over in that direction.

*** I'm not familiar with what's available in that area, but almost certainly you could find a local job there. It would actually give you an advantage because most people want to live AND WORK in the central district.

5. My last question but the most important... is it worth it for me to teach to feel not like a total leech on my wife or is there a possibility of actually working in the IT arena for a foriegn company but making above Thai salary IT wages?

*** 5a: Be serious. Sounds like you supported her for a few years. Nothing wrong with both you making an investment into a better future for both of you. That's what marriage is about. The only danger is her family dragging her down but it depends on your wife and her family.

5b: Extremely unlikely. Thai IT FTE costs 15-25k, so it's hard to compete. Their quality is dubious, but explain that to a Thai manager when the alternative is to pay double or triple that to a farang.

wa just at AUA and they laughed when I mentioned text and talk...not a good training course if you want to work for a good school..just my 2 cents

The people at AUA are snobs who can not teach an Englishman English. Politics is the name of the game there and they bad mouth their own teachers. They also have an ax to grind as they have a TESOL Course there that competes with TxtnTlk. A friend took that course and he said it sucked big time. It is for experienced teachers, not for newbies.

Text and Talk is a practical and thorough course that should be considered by anyone not needing the top line certificate of CELTA. In fact for those who have never taught, it is BETTER as the CELTA is more for experienced teachers. I think they even say that on their website.

------- At the end of the week, specifically Friday and Saturday, many locally employed walking ATM machines will come to your bar, choose carefully! Some have money, but others do not! If he is wearing a suit and tie, check that the tie is not a Pratunam special and check that he isn't wearing trainers.
If he is, forget him because he is most likely an English teacher, and they will only give you peanuts, if they give you anything at all. -------

modusoperandi
I have a few friends that do the teaching gig as a part time supplement to their income and I get to hear them whine about it daily. It's really not as easy as it seems and there are a lot of hassles involved with teaching. For one the pay is usually pathetic for the hours that you put in. If you're doing it with the expectations that you'll be able to live and whore off of it then expect to run out of money the first week of each month. If you haven't learned how to live and eat like a thai yet then you will be hurting even worse.

A lot of english schools are really just clip joints. Most english language schools really aren't that concerned with the students actually learning english. They just want to pack a few funny foreign faces in to bring in the students. Plus the whole system is designed to shuffle as many students as possible through some worthless english certification. You'll have students who have been through 4 years of english classes who still can't speak in complete sentences. These lessons aren't cheap either so the money is mostly just lining the pockets of snake oil salesmen.

The Thai educational system is an enormous joke. Just subtract 5 years off the average student maturity and educational level from what it would be from the west. 15-18 year old kids here are probably only getting the same quality of education that a kid would get in middle school (grade 6-8) in the west. There are schools out there who do teach the kids something but unfortunately they are buried beneath the mountain of clip joints out there.

So beware, if you want to do it for a paycheck it can be frustrating.
