I've just peeked at Nana hotel website and a standard room goes for 1500B - thats 1000B too much. For this you get WiFi internet in the Hotel lobby (??) and a swimming pool with enough chlorine to bleach your skin whiter than Michael Jackson. Cum stains on the carpet are complimentary

Unfair to blast this globally famous alma mater of sex tourists in this fashion. If rooms are still available for 1500 Baht I can only say they're a steal. For 1500 baht no other hotel gives you (i) such a large room (ii) a plentiful supply of toiletries (iii) three bottles of drinking water a day (iv) unfailing daily room cleaning (v) freshly laundered fragrant towels everyday (vi) a lavish breakfast that is a veritable luncheon (vii) the most enviable location in Bangkok (viii) advance room reservation without pre-payment (ix) round-the-clock guest-friendly security that often goes out of its way to help the guest... the list goes on...

Negatives? Old hotel, old carpets in the unrenovated rooms, cockroaches, the occasional smell of the gutter, and, ok, cum stains on the carpet (note, however, never on the towels or bedlinen). But do note, Bangkok is one city you must expect to find cum stains and cockroaches in the most unexpected places, including bar stools, toilet walls, elevators, and so on. IMHO a hotel without a cum stain is probably not a favoured tourist haunt.

Of course, the Nana Hotel is also staffed by some mean-looking women to deter guests who, in the view of the said women, are undesirable. This probably earns the hotel more than its fair share of critics. Caveat emptor.

DG: Yes, sure, Thai are also racist between themselves.

The Thai from BKK look down on the one from Issan,
if you speak to most taxi they :
"dont like people in BKK as they are not really THAI"

Then all Thai look down on people from Lao and Cambodia...

Gogo girls look down on freelancers, freelancers look down on girls working BJ bars...
and they ALL look down on farangs...only forgeting where the money they make come from!

Yes, the naiveté is shocking. A lot of people come here either not knowing of or not keeping in mind the facts that this is a country with no respect for the Rule of Law ; where really there is no police force to enforce the daily law for citizens and so no course for redress or justice but armed and uniformed bullies who will rob their own people ; there is no agreed Constitution under democratically elected processes ; where the electorate are expected to vote for a photo of the parliamentary candidate but know nothing of what the candidate thinks or is standing for ; where the elite and powerful are made up of the established ruling class – the yellows who make the decisions - and the nouveau rich – the reds who don’t see why they can’t get a huge slice of the power and control cake for themselves to continue to exploit the majority of the people ; a country that was found hanging between the Hindus and Moslems on the one side and the superpowers of the Far East on the other, later trapped between the empires of the French and the British for so long ; a people over-run by wave after wave of Chinese immigrants for centuries who then set about carving up the resources and land between themselves and busied themselves with inter-marrying ; a country where if you are a young man, you can bare-back a girl and move on to the next village or town to do the same thing to another unfortunate girl, without any thought of reprisal from anyone nor any regard for social responsibility ; where if you drink and gamble every night with other people’s money and decide not to work, you are still regarded as a man of worth ; a country in which there was no sense of nationhood until the fear in 1932 under the newly-created constitutional monarchy led to a planned country-wide indoctrination that Thailand was Number One and the best in the world which by definition means that everyone else is shit – yes, certain factions in the U.S.A. were not the first to fall into this trap and wont be the last – a country which as a veneer is highly conservative but only because it helps to maintain and retain power and control over people’s lives and not as a result of being based on ethical or moral precepts ; a country where temples are used to store thousands of aborted and rotting foetuses and yet no monk nor police officer nor local official is held responsible – just a securing of convenient scapegoats ; a country in which if a successful ( and identified ) go-go dancer is involved in an accident with her own car, can get beaten up at the police station and can be coerced into providing sex until she pays off the damage not caused by her and is able to reclaim her impounded car for an extra exaggerated fee to swell the brown pockets even more ………….wait, am I boring you ?

The surprising thing in all of this is that you can meet good, honest people who have had to wade through all of this shit since birth, who know what’s what and yet, who are charming, polite and considerate, who have no intention of ripping you off and who show no resentment that you earn a lot more than they do. But, they are in the minority.

A copy of your passport ( and a copy of your work-permit if you work here ) will suffice, if only temporarily. If the “officer” wants to be awkward, he will be, even if you have the original on you.

If a tourist visits anywhere in the world and buys unknown shit from a complete stranger, he’s either looking for an extreme level of excitement that I would always wish to avoid or he is just plain stupid.

And yes, always be aware of your surroundings and environment. It’s a priority incentive never to get drunk out of your mind. At the first smell of trouble in this environment, however tough you are with a history of navy seals or special services or a whole string of tattoos in sensitive areas, just walk away. Life is not like the movies.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Sunday 28 November 2010 :-

Survey: Corruption more common in Thailand
=============================

A business survey revealed that many respondents believed corruption was more prevalent in Thailand but expected the country's economy to grow three to four per cent next year.

The survey was conducted by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, involving 420 business operators nationwide.

62.4 per cent of the polled said they believed corruption was more prevalent in the country than in the past three years.

79.7 per cent said they had paid bribes government officials and politicians in return for concessions and the amount of each bribe was usually more than 25 per cent of the concession.

Most respondents said corruption was the main obstacle for the country's sustainable development and it should be addressed seriously.

However, most business operators expected the Thai economy in 2011 to grow 3.1 to 4.0 per cent year-on-year.

They believed next year's risk factors would be political uncertainty, economic volatility and fluctuating oil prices.
