After I got married to the second wife we went for some food. Northern Thailand. These great big six legged things arrived fried in deep batter. Yuck ! Mauve in deep batter ! I tried!
Absolutely delicious ! Haven't a clue what they were but I had three large plates of them. Sweet flesh but not earthy or seafoody.

I tried the array of bugs on display at the entrance to Soi Cowboy during my recent stay and my Thai girlfriend (who I now know comes from NE Thailand) pick me out a nice selection and I must say they were delicious. The grasshoppers were crisp and crunchy but I like the black things the best - maybe they were crickets? She showed me to pull the wings off first. Also had one of those huge beetle things - they were tough-skinned so we had to suck all the juice out.
I had no visible reaction to them and would gladly eat them again. We actually took ours into the Irish pub in Soi Cowboy and had them with a few Heinekens.

Didn't see the 'red dust' Fanta, but the guy had a salt shaker thing and he sprinkled the contents of that into the bag. Maybe it was something similar.

They were yum. Great as a substitute for potato chips or crisps and great with a beer.
Also fell in love with dried durian.
