being an american you miss those pleasures of ribs and hot wings at the beginning of Fall when College Football begins. (too bad UBC doesn;t get NCAA Football)

Checked out this place at Soi 36 (Suk) across from Thonglor. Pretty good. Outdoor seating, torches lit and big black american guy named Leroy talking the s**t about all sorts of stuff but mainly food. Funny to hear him speak Thai though he speaks Vietamense better.

Hot Wings soaked in Tabasco sauce not that hot sauce that Pizza Hut/KFC gives you. That nice vingeary (sp?) taste, brings back memories. The ribs are pretty good, I think that Seven over off of Kaset New Rd. has better ribs. But the chicken sandwich and collard greens are sweet. didn't try the desserts.

Got the Half Feast around 540 Baht. Includes

1 whole chicken, half rack of ribs, pulled pork, sliced pork, curly fries, jalepeno corn bread, cole slaw, baked beans and potato salad.

we had 3 people (2 guys and girl) we were stuffed. oh yeah ordered the nachos beforehand excellent choice...

For directions go down Soi 36 from Suk. (its too far to walk from the BTS) take a motorcycle taxi at the pump out front or take a taxi in. Between Soi Napasub 4 and 5.

as it seems that most of you go to Timbevati (sp?) for ribs. you should note that the ribs there are honey glazed and not smoked (for 6 hours) like American Rib.

Went there last night, place was packed, had the standard fare. 73 Hot Wings (with the Louisiana Crystal Hot Sauce) full rack of ribs (3), nachos (4), chicken fajitas,, potato skins (3) and about 9 chicken sandwiches and few too many cold brews to wash it down.

Always a good time. in fact the Nation (newspaper) is finally checking out the place tomorrow.

Thanks to Khun Gregg, Khun Thok, and Khun Wes for the magnificent feast for my group.

Cheers to the US embassy boys and girls that came out. Look forward to some new blood in the white house...

Went to Great American Rib place on Soi 36. I ordered the full slab of ribs, which comes with two side dishes. I ordered the baked beans and garlic bread.

The menu has several references to the place serving up “Texas Style” barbeque, and includes the Texas star in their logo. All I can say is that if they served this food in Texas, the sheriff would come in shut the place down.

The ribs were OK, but I could not detect much smoking. They were very tender (usually not a characteristic of heavily smoked meats), which would automatically disqualify them from consideration at any serious barbeque rib contest in the US. There were served wet (with sauce) which tends to indicate that the barbeque flavor was in the sauce and not the cooking.

The baked bean (I not sure I should use the plural since there were only a few) was unquestionably the smallest side dish portion ever served at any barbeque place in the history of the world. They were served on a small dish about the same size as they use in McDonald’s for your ketchup (I am talking about Thailand McDonald’s). The dish had only a thin lip along the edge, so the beans could not be stacked up on each other. In total, there could not have been more than 8 individual beans in the "side" dish. Even by LOS standards, it was absurdly small.

The side order of garlic bread was also small (two thin slices of a French baguette), but it was also forgettable so I didn't really care. Didn’t taste any garlic flavor at all.

Even though I was in BKK for a 4 week stay, and I love ribs (and barbeque in general) I did not feel the urge to return to Great American Rib place. Instead, I got some ribs at Outback Steakhouse that I thought were better, and were a short walk from the BTS (Siam Discovery Center).

LY & I stopped in at GAR tonight. We ordered the half feast.

We found the ribs to be the best item on the menu. I too am from Texas & these are amazing ribs.

Their Mexican food is probably the best in Bangkok too.

Highly recommended for gormets & Bar B Q lovers. In 36 at Soi 5.

Turns out we know some of the owners. The meat is smoked for something like 6 hours. Imported Hickory wood charcoal. They will let you inspect the smokers.

I met one of the owners in Pattaya last week and promised to try the place out next time I'm in Bangkok. He also spoke in length about the extended smoking of the ribs. But, just how do they keep them lit?

This guy, who said he used to have a restaurant in the San Francisco financial district, was checking out a new Mexican Restaurant in Pattaya as market research. I always repect a guy who stays one step ahead of the competition.

The owners are : Wes & his brother Greg. Greg is the manager. Robb is the kitchen supervisor. Say hi to all 3. Wes owns his own construction company & thus the lavish layout of the property.

OK, you know the owners. I will keep that in mind regarding your recommendation.

Maybe he cold smokes the ribs. They are not like smoked ribs found in the southern part of the US (including Texas).

If someone is offering to show you the smoker, then he must have been questioned on this before. The proof is in the food, not looking at the smoker. Hot smoked barbeque is rubbed with spices and has crusty appearance on the outside.

Hot smoked barbeque is made with real wood (hickory, mesquite, etc), not using charcoal made from wood. You cannot generate the same type of smoke from charcoal as you can from wood.

Barbeque served in the American north and far west is usually not the same as Texas (or southern) barbeque. It is only lightly smoked, or cold smoked, or not smoked at all. Part of the cooking is usually done in water or in an oven. The food is then grilled with barbeque sauce for a short time prior to serving. This is not Texas (or southern) barbeque.

damn good meal we had there night before last, I cannot complain about a single thing, VERY good

and the bar that Greg used to run was Blues Factory, and of course Blues Factory is still there in Walking Street, nice guys he and his brother

The rib meat was so succulent and tender that it was nearly falling off the bone, mmm good

I believe they also started Mojo's Blues Bar on Soi 33, which also advertises ribs, although I haven't tried them there, meat loaf was OK.

Blues Factory, great for live music in Pattaya, is a half-block off Walking Street on Soi Lucky Star. If you're walking south, turn left at The Dollhouse.

Mister Alan - I have inspected the entire cooking process - from the marinade (dry) - to the smoking - to the finished product - it nevers gets sauce till right before plating. It is EXACTLY as you describe.

Maybe you could do a little research before trashing the place. If the food doesn't suit you - by all means don't go back. The rest of us like it & would recommend the place.
